those smaller KRK's and genelecs get a bit of an average review in the latest future music issue, the bigger ones get a good review though.

get down to your nearest music store, listen to as many as you can. buy the ones you like or can afford. then get to know them.
my mates who produce for a living say you can mix on anything once you know their characteristics. one in particular (who was number 1 download on beatport earlier this year) swears by his apple soundsticks....

OK, all you guys with the Genelecs and Blue Skys are going to laugh but: I have used Cambridge SoundWorks for low volume near field mixing for years and I can listen to them for hours and hours without fatigue. They are detailed, balanced and smooth.

I had JBL LSR25Ps which sounded good but blew drivers twice in a year, not even running at high volume, who needs the grief? They did fix the first time under warranty, but the second failure happened 4 months later; no warranty.

I liked them so much that thought I would order the Micro Works (slightly larger model) to hopefully get the same sonics with a little more power, but after a week of careful listening I actually had to return the Micro Works system! I really wanted to like it but it didn't do for me.

Checking out the CSW website now, I see that there is a "Micro Works II" model; maybe I'll give that a try some day...their return policy is liberal.

Try them out, what have you got to lose besides the shipping costs (if you're in the US at least). The current price is USD72.00.

(It looks like the current model may be a different design than mine? On my set the subwoofer is in a MDF cabinet, not plastic.)

Disclaimer: I absolute do not work for CSW and am not paid for my opinion.

I have KRK Rockit 8's and they are the only "real" monitor speakers I've ever owned. To me, they are great. They are loud and give great frequency response, although I wish I had a subwoofer to complement them because I tend to favor bass-heavy music.

Don't overlook Event monitors.

I have TR5s which sound great but are a bit lacking in bass. The TR6s are cool (didn't do them when I was buying mine).

TR8s have come down in price now though. I demod them in the shop and they sounded really good, decent bass response too, just too expensive for me at the time.
