How can I record audio from a DVD in Windows?

Post by hacktheplanet » Mon Nov 27, 2006 5:44 am

I'd like to sample some old DVDs. I've used Audio Hijack on OSX. Unfortunately, there isn't a Windows version.

Is there a similar program? I know I could just send a signal back into my audio interface, but I'd rather not worry about creating a feedback loop.

download Audacity (freeware), install it. Set the input to "stereo mix". Play your dvd as you normally would, except hit record in Audacity when you want to record your sounds. Let me know if it works. I know this method has worked for me when I have found no other way of capturing audio in the past, but I never tried it with a DVD. "Stereo mix" setting usually captures all audio on your pc, regardless of what application is using sound, or at least it does on mine.

I just used to loop my outputs into my ins on my M-Audio soundcard and use Soundforge to record.

Better then recording is extracting since you can get all 6 channels separately and use whatever you want. I usually take them all into arranger view and select what I need.
Great for voices or FX. i often take the vocal from the central channel, throw away the rest doing remix from scratch.

If we're talking for sampling purposes you could always use a dictaphone for that LoFi edge...

Man, how the hell did I forget about Audacity... Thanks! Works perfectly.

It is like original if you keep the resolution. I convert to 44.1 and it sounds perfect. Be sure to save as 6 separate files. Live cannot read it otherwise ( Cubase or logic can)
