do I really need Logic Pro?

sorry to raid on your parade, but automation in logic kicks live's butt, midi sequencing, quantizing just the whole spectrum of it is better and not as narrow view as live, you also have apple-loops which if well executed are as good as live's warp functions and then some, the included plugs are worth just the price of logic itself, the summing master mix is better-wider more open, screen sets for multiple set-ups-views, multi-display capability, customizable key commands, and many many many other plus's that i dont have time to jot. Live is an amazing piece of software that i use consistently too and think it is a swell app in its own right especially as a scratch pad or improve instrument, in fact i rewire live into logic, with these two= serious output. but mocking one app over another is ludicrious, just like saying spanish is prettier than english or german is ugly...there are certain things in each that can make you express yourself differently and in more colors over the other. I found that someitmes a slower work pace makes you think abit more than the quickness of live and its impulsive method. experience and feel for yourself what works for "you", before subjecting yourself to outside opinions.

Aha! Now I would definitely say stick with Live. Absynth 3 is all the synth you need for quite a while.

Live 6, stylus rmx, and Absynth 3 will be a wicked combo. Grab yourself a few freebies like automat and crystal and your set.

Dig hard into Live6 and absynth, it'll keep you going forever.

Hmmm...maybe the real question should be...Do I Need Hardware Synths at all???

If I kept Logic; got Arturia Analogue Factory...and, say, Albino 3...where would I be?

Software heaven. I would think!

Or...just albino 3 and Analogue facvtory!

The one thing that was bugging me about Logic (I have to be honest here) was that there isn't an arpeggiator to be seen! And I LOVE arpeggiators. They are really creative tools in that if you know a bit about music (as in formal knowledge) you can use arps to really speed up the process of constructing melodies in what I call the 'subtractive melody construction' method!

Ahhhhhhhhh life is too short! (read my post in the smoking thread). Maybe I should just get ALL the things I can afford to get!

BTW glitchrock-buddha...how is the novation remote sl? Do you have the new version 2 software update? I have a korg kontrol 49 and was thinking of changing to the new Novation units for that extra sophisticated control!

If you're primarily recording audio, I'd stick to Live, or dare I say it..... Pro Tools! I've used Logic on and off for years, and find audio editing a nightmare in it. I'd rather use Pro Tools. Midi is excellent in Logic, and both Logic and Pro Tools are wonderfull for Mixing and basic arranging, but I still think in terms of writing and composing, Live is way ahead. You don't have to think about anything, or plan or prepare, or decide what tempo you want to work at etc.. Maybe once you've got some solid tracks and ideas down, look at getting another program to mix down with later.

I think one of the nice things about Logic PRO is it comes with everything you need as far as instruments, effects etc

but I don't think anyone will argue that a couple of analog (or outboard) synths would be bad

Keep Logic. On an Intel Mac, precious few plugins are currently supported and Logic is bursting at the seems with excellent instruments, excellent quality FX, and sample based instruments and sounds. Logic is worth every penny. Live is cool. I like using it for trying to come up with new idea and for doing stuff with audio. I suspect that for remix work it should be great. For midi, I still prefer Logic where midi tools and features are very mature. It's cool that you can now use midi and virtual instruments in Live, but this is pretty new to Live and now very deep as of yet, so for me it's a clunky experience. So I'd say, Keep Logic Pro.

i came into this thread thinking, you dont need Logic,

But then i thought -

Whatever Daw you use, they are all still intruments/devices that you use to get your tunes done.

They all suita purpose and my approach is to use what is best at that time.

I realise cash is tight, and i have built my software collection over time and owned several versions of each.

My current configuration is using Cubase 4, and then using both Kontakt 2 and Fruity loops as drum machine plugins inside cubase,

I use Reactor 5, Electronic Instruments XT, Spektral Delay and a shit load of oher plugins

I generally make loads of wierd and wonderfull loops and then migrate them all over to live 6,

Where i perform tracks using all of the live plugins.

Ontop of all this i have a Yamaha o1v, which everything can route too if i wish, i have synths, drum machines, and loads of sample libraries.
That is the best of all worlds.

I think what i am trying to say is: you have Live 5, and you have paid a god price for Logic, would anybody here trade a copy of Logic for a Live 5 to 6 upgrade.

I doubt it.

Get Live 6 a bit later, or get that aswell while you can get the edu price.

DOnt look back and regret - make the most out of your tools - think outside of the box.

Hey there,

I hope not to throw a spanner in the works, but my advice would be to keep live and logic for now. You have the two top programs. Together they are mean as. Live has an arpegiator. Also, don't caught up in all the hum drum to upgrade to live 6, i bought live 5 and got the automatic upgrade, but to be honest the live 6 features are yet to be fully utilised. I still operate in live 5 mode. Logic has so many awesome instruments as everyone has pointed out. Why sell it and get absynth or something else when logic has so many instruments and effects? If you want to move into the pro domain [and trust me, the more time goes on, you will] then you will look to run a more proffesional app than live when the time comes. Since you have logic now you really need look no further. I run pro-tools, but if i had a choice i would move to logic, simply because of the out-dated nature of pro-tools, and logics aforementioned instruments and tools. Logic is quickly stepping up to become a superceder to PT as the industry standard, so since you already own it you are one step ahead. I think Live and Logic combined is the ultimate. Whatever you add on to that will only make things better. Money comes and goes, and more will come at some later stage. i say keep both, and upgrade to six and buy all the other little add-ons you want later. You have the two sweetest apps on the market right now. Use them, and stop procrastinating.

What are you using it for? I think Logic is still a superior DAW over Live for quite a number of reasons that we have covered over and over. I love Live, it's fun and simple to use, but I just find Logic better for writing music in. Like most other people say, its virtually a complete studio, with tones of top gear to get going.

Adding something like Analog factory, a Moog or Albino down the line could be great for finding different sounds. In fact, adding something like Battery 3 or LinPlugs RMIV would be excellent because most find Ultrabeat over-complicated, though see what you think.

Check out Logic's website (www.apple.com/logicpro) and see for yourself whats included and then think about how it's going to be useful for you. To be honest, as Glitchrock said, if you picked up Live and a decent synth, you won't be making a mistake!

Either way, you'll be using one of the two best tools for music on a Mac.

I already have Stylus RMX...how does that fit with either/both daws? I would like more 'straight' drum sounds though.

Oh, and as 'art' mentioned Live's arpeggiator, can I use that for Logic's synths etc? It seems that Logic has no arps at all?

And can Live be the 'Master' when they are rewired together? I was told that Logic would always be the Master, and that would take away some of what Live could add to Logic I would think.

Then I am a bit new at all this so maybe I don't quite know what I am talking about?

my boy just got a new PC computer - he really likes this one program call making waves

he's had the computer for little under a month - with just Making Waves he's already produced a super duper jam which is getting remixed by a couple heavy hitters in the techno scene

So I left him a comment on myspace that said something about Making Waves - he denied my comment

he said he didn't want people to think he was using a "lesser" "not pro" program to make his music, he thought people would think less of his music because he's using something that doesn't fit into the PRO category

I was like, that's the beauty of it - you're using something no one has heard of and your blowing a lot of people's music out of the water

that's what I'm saying here - it's up to you, only you have the correct answer to your question

great and funny story. though it´s deffirent if you produce pure techno or someting older, rooted way back in more analogue days. but nevertheless, very nice for your boy!
