Problems As Rewire Slave to Cubase SX 3.11 OSX

Post by kineticUk » Tue Feb 28, 2006 3:54 am

Just been having a good mess about with the latest beta to test it what its like rewired.
I can't believe how bad it is, I just hope ableton are able to fix it.
Exporting rewired audio to cubase doesn't really work because the audio has a bit cutoff the front and plays back out of line with cubase project. You have to do two takes and edit the audio externally to get something usuable.
Cubase crashes if I quit it after working on projects with live rewired
And also when I was messing around with live rewired I pressed the Ext Sync button in live and all the files in the cubase project got moved around, lengths had changed, Start positions were off. Crazy
Its unusable for me and pointless as I cannot bounce the audio into my cubase project from live with these problems.

Anyone else noticed anything like this with live rewired as slave or know ways to get around this?

Thanks

Just to update on a few rewire problems (I have tested this with the latest beta5)
Firstly when rewired to SX (Live as Slave),
If I press play on live audio clip, the sequencer plays for one bar and then the live clip starts. This seems strange to me anybody else notice this?
Alot of the time if I bounce the rewire track down to audio, the resulting audio file has a tiny bit missing off the beginning. Rewire is sample accurate so this should not happen. If I start and stop the sequencer a few times and then bounce I can get a decent bounce (It sort of prepares live for the bounce I think)
On one clip in my live set something very strange happened,
The orange dot appearing at the second bar to indicate offset. There was no offset though...the resulting bounced audio file would break up at this point (Pops, crackles).
I tried again and again to bounce this clip to audio via rewire but had the same broken audio at the point where the orange dot had appeared.
Finally managed to get around this, pressed lives stop button, back to arrangement and then pressed the play button in live instead of spacebar and it recorded ok afterwards.
I think this is weird and obviously a bit buggy.
Can anybody else use rewire well ?

Just tested latest beta (b7) OSX (Mentions rewire slave fixes on OSX)

Rewire problems still obvious :

1. Why does the live clip not sound until 1 bar has passed ? (This happens every time and is easily reproducible), but makes no sense. If I press play the clip should play then and there.
Once it has been played and is restarted, it sounds straight away and plays back as you would expect it to.

2. Orange dot appears sometimes for no reason and causes playback to glitch at that point in the clip causing spikes, crackles and pops. This is a bug and happens all the time.

Ableton I have sent you info to beta as well
I hope this helps you.

Just bump this up because I feel its important rewire is fixed before 5.2 gets released
Also noticed Rewire Slave fixes were for Intel Macs Only
OK Ableton ... Hope you can sort these rewire issues out
Thanks

rewire

Post by apupped » Fri May 05, 2006 7:18 am

I cant even get mine to rewire! All I get is a post saying rewire problem go to ableton web site for possible fixes. Using Cubase SX 3.1 and ableton 4.0. I set up ableton as a rewire device in Cubase before I try to open Ableton. Mmmm anybody?

Hmmm I am not sure about that...its all automatically detected
You should get message showing rewire engines being installed during Lives installation process (Sorry first boot after install). Then in cubase, ableton should just appear in the menu with other rewireable apps eg reason.

Could you get around 2 fixing these Rewire issues?
Or maybe acknowledge the problem?
Or just not include the problem in 5.2.1
And fix it so its not in version 6 ?
Good idea innit
Only messing (I just found out you can send midi into live 6 from the rewire master :D I had wanted this for ages its great news.)
Sometimes I post and then feel bad ... This just happened  (I will test the beta ableton and I am sure rewire will be sweet if its now updated.)
Thanks

Got the same problem with Cubase SE3 as ReWire master and Live 5.2 as slave in Mac OS X 10.4.7 (G4, not Intel). On startup there is an error message like you stated.

I got the impression from Live 6 info material that sending MIDI to Live from the ReWire master would finally be possible. This would be great.

So I'm back again... (This time its personal...actually scrap that)
This time testing 6.0.2b6 (serious Rewire problems)

When running Live as rewire slave, I tested out sending midi to Impulse from a Cubase Midi track. The impulse inside Live receives midi from Cubase and plays back but ...

1. Timing seems sloppy as.
2. Recording is absolute shi*e/useless because its anything but sample accurate
3. This function is useless right now.
Basically when I tried to bounce the midi pattern (which was playing impulse) to audio from Cubase, the timing problems were having a big effect. So the first beat was half missing and the recording was rubbish. I've had similar issues before with rewire and version 5...this time its far worse (Don't ask me why). Something seriously wrong here. Its Broken ... End of Story.

I think someone @ ableton needs to look at this before releasing bug fix 6.0.2 (Its pretty obvious that nobody has looked at this).
Should I test other hosts ? I'll probably get some better info on the current rewire situation if I do, so I'll be back when I can with more.

I'm also having a rewire problem under OS X. If Live is either rewire slave to Logic, or Rewire master to Reason, I have this problem. The problem is, Somehow, using rewire messes with midi. As soon as I use Rewire, Live begins to respond poorly when I go to the midi mapping (Command/M or Command/K). It gets quickly into the window, but it takes maybe 4 seconds to get back out of the window or mode. This continues after I finish the rewire session, close out both programs, then reload Live. Even after restarting the computer, it still remains. The only fix for this is to throw out some of Lives prefs. Then it's immediately back to normal. The template document is Ok and doesn't need to be thrown out or replaced. Another problem with rewire is that coming from the other program back to Live, Live doesn't respond quickly, but takes a few seconds before you can move any control or click on anything. None of this happens with Live/Reason on the PC (Windows under bootcamp on same intel box.) Live is also perfectly fine running as a rewire slave to Cubase SX3).

I'm running an intel Imac 2.0 Ghz, 2 gigs ram. Logic Pro 7, latest update. Reason 3 with latest update. Everything is intel compatible.

Rewire works fine for me with Live 6 and Cubase SX 3.1.1.944 in Windows XP.

I have noticed this problem with rewire in pro tools for as long as I can remember and I am having the same problem right now. Pro Tools will start for a measure in sync with live, then live will start again at the beginning, causing the entire sequence to be off by about 2 beats (but not precisely)

This is driving me crazy. Glad to hear it's not just my system... which I knew it wasn't because it happens on
my G4 powerbook with ProTools LE 7.0
my g4 powerbook with ProTools HD3 accel 7.1
My g5 tower with ProTools HD3 Accel 7.1

All with Ableton 6.0.1
Plenty of memory, plenty of processing power.. just the same problem on every system. The thing is that it appears reproducible, but sometimes it doesn't happen... i can get a normal sequence going after pressing start stop about 10 times in different places along the timeline and then it seems to be synced.

I sent an email to tech support so hopefully Ill hear something back?...
anyone else having this problem?
