1) Ableton Live CPU Meter % - 11%
2) Laptop/Desktop? Make/Model - Homebuilt ATX DAW
3) Operating System - Windows XP SP2
4) CPU Make Model and Speed - Core 2 Duo E6600 2,4 GHz
5) Amount of Ram / Speed of Ram - 2x1024Mb DDR2 PC6400
6) Soundcard (Stock or add on? - M-Audio Delta Audiophile 2496
7) Hard Disk Drive Speed - IDE 7200 rpm.

I just upgraded from an old 478 P4 3.2 running at 3.6. The difference is (pardon my french) F*CKIN HUGE! I would've never imagined the difference. I just about had it with a new track of mine that was almost impossible to work with because the cpu maxed out all the time, almost from the very beginning to the very end. With the new cpu and some blazing fast ram, the track can play without even going over 30%. Also, the cpu is more than 20C cooler than before, and not even half the noise of before, even with stock fan.

Amazing... Respect to Intel.
Long Live Live.

So 4 cores on a MacOs are the same as 2 on WinXP?
Yes, it's a bit suprising, but I think those c2d are a later gen than the xeons in mac pro? Also xeons have much weaker memory bandwidth. It also suggests Live isn't making the best use of the extra 2 cores :( Possibly not a good idea to self build an 8 core xeon 5300 based DAW then.

Did you try some tweaks of Mac OSX ? Or Windows ?

I have found the same to be true, especially with latency and at high cpu loads. the difference is furthered by vista which gives 5-10% lower cpu scores than xp.

what gives? mach kernel? why is the virtual page file in osx like 10+ gigs?

With 6.01

1) Ableton Live CPU Meter 9-10%
2) Laptop/Desktop Custom built E6600
3) Operating System xp sp2
4) CPU Make Model and Speed 2.4 GHz intel Core 2 Duo
5) Amount of Ram / Speed of Ram 2 GB MHz DDR2 667 Mhz
6) Soundcard M-AUDIO Firewire 1814
7) Hard Disk Drive Speed 7200 sata II

When idle its around 4-5%

Note: If anybody gets higher than 10-12 with an E6600 or 67000 its the BIOS settings..there are lots of energy saving etc type of settings in the bios which decreases the speed of the cpu when its idle etc..like speedstepping in centrinos..you should disable all of them...I use a gigabyte DS4 mainboard..maybe its different with other brands..
