Feeling good about going for 5400 in my new MBP! - the 5400rpm IDE drive in my G4 800MHz with Live 4 and OS9 has served me perfectly well to date for gigs.

Big studio projects go on the external 7200 FW drive though.

yeah, it depends on "which" lappy and "which" drive..........although in "theory" that is correct. I hope it goes without saying that a 4200 is NOT preferred at any rate......

Let me ask a question within' a question........is it not a good idea to have a 5400 internally and to put all your samples, disc recordings, etc. on a fw super-large 7200 drive?

i just keep my current projects on my internal drive...all the stuff im not working on goes on the external....

That's exactly what I do.

5400rpm has always been fast enough for the internal drive for me when playing out too.

5400rpm has always been fast enough for the internal drive for me when playing out too.

seems to make sense for the laptop situation. it's the samples and so on that need faster speeds, not so much the os. Although again, I believe 4200 isn't enough.....my sony lappy with a 4200 is WAY too slow for the most part........(although newer model)

i installed a Hitachi 100GB 7200 rpm hd (HTS721010G9SA00) on my macbook right after getting it. have it now 7 months and it works perfect. no heat issues, no noise (although i have nothing to compare to, as i almost never used my 5400 one -- this machine is just very quiet to my ears).
the original 5400 60GB is now my lil compact external..

i hate the 5400 slowness. no matter how fast is you CPU, this will always slow some things down.
not sure though, if a anything bigger than 100GB is available on 2.5'' sata's

Hitachi and Seagate are up to 160GB/5400/sata at the moment. Seagate will release a 160/7200 in the new year and then a few months later hitachi will release a 250GB/5400 and a 200/7200. All 2.5" SATA.
