Motu ultralite

Post by sadmac » Tue Dec 05, 2006 1:42 am

Hi all. I just got it. worked little with it and i have some questions:

1) is it possible to be recorded the changes on the ultralite's main volume?
I mean if i start play something silent and then starting turning on the volume will that movement through motu be recorded? if not then what should i do to make this ( just working with the software? )

2) trying to use the cue mix ( the powerbook in the main out and a radio in 3-4 main inputs ) i can listen both but cannot turn off laptop's volume through the cue mix console...even if i put it down the sound is not there. The same does not happen with the radio. If the radio's faders in cue mix console be manipulate then i can listen and see ( in colour faders ) the difference. Do you think this ha something to do with installing updated drivers? Does anybody know if i am ok by installing the one in the cd?

3) in general : how do you set it for a live set ( its volume)?
how do you set it for recordings at home?
is it better to work with the software's master out or with motu's main out?

thank you very much for reading

any tips tricks or any bugs that you have been faced up would be really helpful for me.

thank you

1. no, it would be great if you could control it via midi cc. can't see why they don't do this.

2. no, there's no control for audio coming from the computer. crazy.

i don't even bother with the cuemix software, other than using the onboard mixer when i need. i just set up a template with the in/out set up how i need and leave it like that. sometimes i'll go in and adjust by hand if needed. you can save several configurations in it if you have different uses for it. cuemix is good for this at least, being able to see better what you're doing. doesn't integrate well though, just mix through Live.
Nord G2, E-mu e4X
Live, Reaktor, etc.

what exactly you do with the onboard mixer?
its really awuful that the adjusting cannot be recorded. what you mean by '' i go in and adjust by hand if needed''

i am thinking of getting the mackie onyx 1220. so if i use it will it then be possible to work like powerbook>motu>mackie>motu and then the recording and all its manipulation recorded in my software...is that possible? did you try something similar?

and one last question: i guess that the internal laptop's volume is set to maximum automatically by connecting the firewire. Did you ever figure out how can u make sudden silence if needed? can u do it with motu?
in your live sets do you use any other buttons except the main out?

thank you very much for your help.

If I can understand what you are saying.
1) If you want to have automation of volume changes, use Live 6 to make automation changes using a MIDI controller. Don't expect the MOTU to do that for you.
2) If you're using Live 6, forget about using the MOTU mixer. Do everything from within Live.
3) I have a Traveler and find the Cuemix useful for setting up non-computer live applications. You can set a number of presets and use those for different rigs, effects sends, etc. If you're including a computer DAW as part of that rig, then you'll need to do a lot of that stuff through your computer.
No bugs for me.

I know you can set up the Ultralite to work with a control surface in the Cuemix program that comes with it. I bet you could do some sort of wizardry in Live to control it that way. Not sure how.

And with the Onyx, unfortunately you can't affect the volume of the incoming signal via MIDI CC, AFIAK.

even like that there is a bug and the volume doesn't discrease instead of moving the master fader. its not that important but it is problem.

you mean that i cannot affect the signal that will go from ultralite to onyx????
i dont want to affect the sound via midi, i want to eq'ing it via mackie's knobs.

thank for help
