external hard disk specs

Post by guiminha » Tue Dec 05, 2006 6:47 pm

Hi there,

What kind of specs should I look for when shopping for an external HD to store my tracks/wavs for laptop DJing with Ableton Live?

Is USB enough? Firewire? 5400 or 7200 RPM? Any model/brand suggestions?

Regards,

G

I did. but did not find anything useful. The search mechanism for this forum is rather limited, and I never find what i am looking after (or it gives thousands of hits or it gives none).

If you could point me to the original posts, I would be glad.

I use my laptop harddrive (5400rpm) and an external FW400 320GB 7200rpm (3.5") with a 8MB cache (Lacie and WD, same spec).

I tend to not have huge numbers of tracks though. The externals are used for backup/library.

Thanks for the tip Robin.

I use a Firewire Audiophile M-Audio soundcard, so if I get a firewire HD I would just hook it to the firewire port 2 in my Audiophile card, would't it? (port 1 is connected to PC laptop). Does firewire works like a SCSI bus? Anyone tried/using this? Any troubles?
