Live 3 is sketchy in Mac OS 10.2.6

Post by shermanfunk » Tue Apr 13, 2004 6:29 pm

Ever since upgrading from Live 1.5.2 to 3.02, then 3.03, and now to 3.04, i've been noticing crappy sounding skips and really short stutters that mostly occur randomly. I was having way more stability and smoothness in 1.5.2, and that don't seem right.

In fact, Live is actually putting me in the pissed off category. I've got a 1 gig G4 with 2 gigs of RAM, and i'm not doing anything different than what I was doing in 1.5.2, when there was no skips in the audio clips.

Seems to me like Live 3.04 is not a good update for Mac OS X. There still seems to be extra hard disk activity, saves take fucking forever, i'm just generally disappointed. I still love the program, but it's not what it should be yet. (Optimize for Mac Velocity Engine?)

Don't tell me i need to upgrade to Panther, cause i ain't doing it.

Thank you, so I am not the only one! I'm not using more clips or effects than before, and it seems to do it mostly when i'm switching between windows, but does it if I'm just sitting there listening. The sound of the skip just sounds like shit, and it's extremely annoying and embarrasing when I'm trying to work with someone in my studio.

Hopefully this is addressed and resolved very soon!

peace

Did you try to change your latency?

"Did you try to change your latency?"

Not yet, suggestions on what it should be at? I will experiment and re-post, thanks.

Settings are currently set at 13ms + 13ms + 0ms = 26ms

I dropped the box down to -23 ms, giving the overall latcncy of 3 ms, and it still does it, but it seems to do it a little less. CPU usage goes between about 42% and about 53%

latency settings are something I'm super knowledgable about, is it all about experimenting on your system and finding the perfect medium?

Hmm, 13ms should be quite enough - wich sound cart are you using and how is it connected to your comp? PCI, Usb, firewire etc..

I've got an Echo Mia, it's in a PCI slot, there's never been a problem with any latency on my computer ever , it's not the soundcard, it's something with these latest updates of Ableton Live, for sure.

I do hope you manage to get it fixed.. luck

http://scsi.radified.com/

some enlightening stuff, though only remotely relevant

I've seen some DAW's or diagrams outlining the use of pcs AND a MAC,
for obstacle route-around, which reminds me of some mac vs. pc arguments I've seen and a solution, where similarly, at the link, or "Radified" the author speaks about IDE vs. Scsi type arguments, so I matched 'em up, just as food for thought for anyone with ample funds to play.

This is the link through which I learned the answers to many of my previous questions. I think its very cool,& may try to order one of their systems.

I do really wish you luck friends, you deserve it.
