I've been trying to decide which piece of software to use with live - at the moment it's down to either Reason 3 or Fruityloops 6.

I'd HATE to learn Reason 3 then have is discontinued! :x

I've had Reason 3 since it came out and feel like I've only barely skimmed the surface of what I can do with it.

I don't *need* a 4.0 for a long, long time.

I never see how people get caught up in "I can't wait for the next something or other to come out" game. It's just your excuse for not making music.

Use what you have.

some users, as myself, use reason since 2.0..
the 'excuse' that I have is that since 1.0, reason hasn't changed that much..
The malstrom, combinator and mastering suite are basicly the 3 big changes throughout the 6 years of existence..
i.m.o. it has one of the slowest progression in audio software land..
so it's about time something 'really' big is going to happen..

The fact that you just hopped on the reason train at 3.0 says nothing about other people wanting to see 4.0, who also might know reason inside out..
No excuse..

You know per haps the program was so far ahead of the game and they got it right the first couple of tries they don't need version after version after version

The program is so deep (user since version 1) you could probably spend half a lifetime using it and learn new stuff every other day

personally love the program - I'm learning new stuff everyday...what I like is when I hear a new jam or someone elses production and you can spot Reason tricks - fun times

anywayz - I think the program is dope the way it is and it works - version 4 would probably be cool but what's the rush

Hi Guys,

I can, without question, state that Reason is alive and well. Something else that we tend to think of Reason as: An evergreen product.

Which is to say, people don't necessarily say: I use Photoshop CS, 7.0, 2.5 or whatever. They say: I use Photoshop. Same with ProTools, etc. They get great results out of whatever version they may be using. Its nice to have the latest and greatest, but it certainly isn't necessary to make great things with.

We think of our Reason as an eternally useful musician's environment for making all kinds of music. We see/want people saying: I use Reason (which is how most say it now anyway), and not really reflect on which version they may be using.

Now, is Reason at the end of its line? What do you think? ;)

:)

Agreed. Like most Reason users, I can pretty quickly come up with a list of things I'd like to see changed or added. But, I could also happily work with 3.0 for a long time.

I don't think the Props will disappoint us. More likely they'll pull out another brilliant new trick.

On Ernst's blog several moons ago, he was talking about them needing to find a design person to help them with their interface, ease of use, etc. In that post he mentioned that the next version of Reason was already designed, so we know there will be at least one more ver.

One of the funny things about reason - NO AUDIO! Rewiring is all good and well, but it it would be nice if it accomodated audio samples...

Although - that DOES encourage original creativity I suppose...

nn-19 and nnxt. It definitely accomodates audio, but doesn't record audio. Never will.

robtronic: sure, nnxt and nn19 play samples, and they do a great job, except if the sample is long. I use reason in a rock band live. When I was first learning the bands older material, I needed to set up the songs to play back inside reason so I could experiment with sound design for my parts, etc. This sucked. A lot.

The sample has to play back from teh beginning every time. There is no way just to loop the bridge, or the verse. I had to just sit and wait until the right part.

You can't even get around it using recycle since recycle has a really really tiny limit to how long the sample can be.

Not having recording is fine. Not being able to include long snippets of audio is really limiting sometimes.

(Note: I am a happy Reason user and have been for a while. There are lots of improvements I'd like to see from the live performance standpoint (transposing incoming midi in combinators and being able to read the pach name from farther away would both be awesome), but it's pretty solid. You guys may lose me to Live eventually as I've started needing to record stuff more often and rewire is sort of inconvinient, thought I anxiously await Props next big announcement.)
