actually, the full beat does not keep playing when he's adjusting things -- he switches to different beats using only one hand. as others have noted, that's pretty much live drums (what's he tweaking is delays, resonance, you don't get much of that sound because it's dominated by live sound). i doubt there's a sampler involved at all.

whoa, there's a sampler involved, all the blinking pads on the SP808 are the ones that are playing, he runs through most of the group then switches to another set (when the pads blink in sequence) to change songs.
The SP808 is a dope piece of kit, I don't use mine anymore but its editing and playback was damn cool, I could do a lot on that thing and heard plenty of songs people did using just that box. The FX are great and had optical, digital and plenty of clean audio I/O options. The 2nd generation made it even better. Live put mine out of business.
Cool drummer regardless of how he does it, he's doing it and it sounds great.

that maybe true at some points, but i'm sure i saw a few times when he was playing only the hi-hat and i heard snares and kicks. still, he is quite good, as are the other drummers linked here. awesome thread.
i gotta say in kamoni's defense (and i know this thread was never dissing on him) that what he does is still pretty cool and unique. the fact that he does a lot of sound design and triggers all original samples, and that it's all realtime, no looping, no sequences, makes it more fun to watch i think. as soon as you get into looping and using more gear, it becomes less obvious how it's done. i know bc i tried to talk kamoni into making live loops and he has always been resistant and for good reason i suppose. i still do live looping, but i do think that most people don't quite 'get it' unless they are watching your every move.
here is another classic -

not jungly or DnB-ish, but he performs solo, drums and Nord.

i'm not saying there's no sampler there, i'm saying he's not using it to trigger sampled loops of his own playing. doesn't really matter, but if you play drums, you can tell that what you're hearing is pretty much what he's playing (which is why (e.g.) the various hat patterns become less complex when he's using one hand to tweak things).
and it's also not particularly difficult playing for a trained drummer (notice -- not saying it's not cool, he's not great, i don't like it), just few of the kids can really play paradiddles these days.

you're right in a way, it isn't the most difficult stuff in the world, but what he is doing really well is capturing the swing of a break beat which most people can't play right at that speed. most drummers when they speed up to breakbeat speed no longer have the proper swing and can't play the range of velocities it requires.dj superflat wrote:i'm not saying there's no sampler there, i'm saying he's not using it to trigger sampled loops of his own playing. doesn't really matter, but if you play drums, you can tell that what you're hearing is pretty much what he's playing (which is why (e.g.) the various hat patterns become less complex when he's using one hand to tweak things).

It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.
