doesn't peter tools hammer let you use reason for audio processing (w/o the sampler workaround)?

Perhaps if you are on windows. I'm not.

The newer ASIO4ALL drivers include this thing called ReWuschel that lets you use the ReBirth input device as an input from your sound card. Basically, you can run live audio into Reason just as it is but that's about it. The only application I have used this for is running a guitar of keyboard through the Scream module which is pretty cool in itself.

IMHO- Reason is rapidly losing market share and will soon be out of bidnez.

I'm so sure Propellersheaders notice that too.
If you have FM8 or Absynth4, would you still use Subtractor?
Those new instruments make computer more likely to be a REAL INSTRUMENT.
So I think something is going to happen before the end of 2006. 8)
God, please make me right.

Reason is doing more than fine. It certainly is one of the top applications of its type and only gaining in production studio usage.

IOW, it is okay to have an opinion. It is entirely another thing to be correct with that opinion. ;)

That being said, there is more to come eventually (as has been noted above in reference to Ernst's blog). As a policy, Propellerheads do not comment on timeline or product releases. :)

Anyway, I think everyone is waiting for the new release.
It is just a matter of time.

I don't *need* a 4.0 for a long, long time.

I never see how people get caught up in "I can't wait for the next something or other to come out" game. It's just your excuse for not making music.

Use what you have.
some users, as myself, use reason since 2.0..
the 'excuse' that I have is that since 1.0, reason hasn't changed that much..
The malstrom, combinator and mastering suite are basicly the 3 big changes throughout the 6 years of existence..
i.m.o. it has one of the slowest progression in audio software land..
so it's about time something 'really' big is going to happen..

The fact that you just hopped on the reason train at 3.0 says nothing about other people wanting to see 4.0, who also might know reason inside out..
No excuse..
Well, actually...I have been with Reason since 1.0, I was even at the Winter NAMM show in Anaheim where it was unveiled and was on the Beta team (also beta'd Recycle...back when beta testing meant the Props mailed the program on a CD from Sweden to us). So please don't make assumptions.

I don't understand why a "slow progression" is such a negative...the program has been nothing but rock-solid since it came out.

So many here seem to be stuck in this "Ableton" mindset that a program MUST upgrade significantly every year. That's just asinine.

The Fender Strat has been the same damn guitar since the late 50's.

The freakin' piano has been around hundreds of years.

Yet you all seem to think that if 12 months goes by in the lifecycle of some piece of software w/o a "significant" upgrade that A) the company is going under and B) you somehow are stifled from making music.

That's just insane.

If you have music in you to be made, it'll come out, regardless of what new dohicky some programmer decides to stick in a piece of software.

The thing is, Absynth runs $300 by itself... Reason runs like what, $400 and has a just immense amount of sound in it. Certainly the sounds are not top of the line but with a little work they are more than passable... it's especially great for entry level folks like me who don't really want or need to spend $300 on one synth and maybe another $200 for drums and etc. It's a nice source of sound even if the sequencer and interface do leave some things to be desired.

feel you on that. but i just recently rediscovered reason. and maelstrom, and subtractor are capable of some insane sounds. run through some outboard gear, and the stuff can sound pretty solid.

one advantage of rediscovering something is that generally know how to use it. no time spent getting comfy/etc. then again, i have never found reason all that comfortable, i always rewire it to another sequencer ... live.

people get so caught up in update madness that they forget they have unlimited possibilities right in front of them. I used to read all the magazines and believe that the new thing would change my music for the better but it's simply not true, it's all about your own style and approach. Not to say that there's not amazing things going on in software these days,
it really just comes down to what feels good (live and reason for me)
ableton 7, cubase 4, some plugs and controllers etc.

Casio released this several years ago. It has built-in speakers and the keys light up to tell you which note to play next!
