I built my first PC, switched to a Mac g4, went back to PC, then got a Mac now I'm back on PC - my next computer will be a PC laptop

Macs are nice computers but I don't think I'd use one again - after discovering some of the best free plug-ins in the world and what seems to be some better performing and supported applications why go back to a macintosh

My transition from PC to Mac was expensive, it wasn't difficult but expensive as I had to buy MAC licences for some programs - if I switched over now it'd cost some cash to upgrade a few plugs to UB - I don't have extra cash laying around at the moment for some UB upgrade.

I like Macs, they're pretty and really I have nothing bad to say about them

The transition will be as easy as you make it

It is absolutely ridiculous that so many peeps are blowin' a wad of hard-earned $$ to buy a macintel only so that they can run windows to be able to run the apps that they really wanted to use in the first place.

I have three computers:

1. XP machine that I do all my audio work on
2. Vista laptop for work
3. OSX Imac (mostly video and general computing)

I can flow between all three of them with no issues. It seems like over the years the differences between the OS's has been cut down so much (from stealing ideas or whatever) that you should really be able to pickup the Apple and be going 100% in almost notime (and I honestly believe that nowadays an Apple user could go to MS with no probs as well).

They have made computers too easy

If you're only running Windows apps, i agree completely. But if you need both (as I do), then it's the only option. And a really nice one too I might add.

i just got my macbook yesterday and i never worked on a mac longer than 3-5 days and i must admit that mac is much more intuitive than windows.

I'm a recent switcher, I have done music with PC and now my new MacBook.
The switch has been easy for me.

I do not use much plug-ins, I have Live/Operator, external gears (Sound modules) and SampleTank LE (wait for UB to come out).

I'm happy of what I have done. You can read my post about my first impressions in the forum.
I use a FW interface and a Mixer so I do not have any problem with latency.
I'm monitoring directly from my Mixer, so 1ms, 2ms or more makes no difference for me. I'm guitarist mainly and I can distinguish between white and black keys...

What I need is a good latency when I play my plug-ins and I'm happy with what I got.
As someone said, if you want to use Live effects in real time you need very low latency but this has nothing to do with Mac...

It's your taste that counts
The heaviest part of the switch was to have to deal with Apple guys in the Apple store. In my experience they acted in a rude manner..too proud of what they sell if you know what I mean.

A part that, I found my experience a very good one. I'm wishing you the best enjoyment as I'm doing these days. Go for 2GB of RAM and you'll never regret.

Why?

Well, all the "experts" you are talking about are not musicians.
If you play piano, 10ms is no big deal. because there is 25ms of mechanical delay from when you press the key to when the hammer hits the string.

BUT.. for drummers and guitar players.. not so.. you are used to hearing sound when you TOUCH the string or drum head. Thats more like 1ms or less when you are right next to the drum or guitar.
Why is 6ms unusable? because its 6ms in and 6ms out.. 12ms total.
UNUSABLE.
most idiots cant tell.. but a good musician will not be able to play with the delay.. especially with certain styles of music. I have experienced this many times and the only solution was to go cardbus with an rme multiface or a cardbus echo.
the sound of a soundcraft digital 328 hooked up via adat to cardbus is UNPARALLED. i have never heard anything sweeter. and with pci we are able to monitor thru effects and its USUABLE!

how about 3ms on firewire? 3ms in + 5ms out =8ms what? 5ms out? yes. because there is always 2ms extra with firewire that they are not telling you about. this is well documented. do a search. furthermore, it uses more cpu than pci-cardbus so you cant do much with it.

And I tried to "switch" to Mac.. and was Hugely disappointed. Sorry, but it was all fluff to me.
I like the way vista looks and works much better.
Photoshop CS2 on intel mac is a JOKE!!!!!!!

Thats fine you maybe able to tell the difference I said I am at 3ms on my tascam firwire plugged into a 400 firewire port so from 3 to 2 ms is still not 10ms
By the way the experts I mention are all musicians
Photshop CS2 is not a universal binary yet so yeah if thats your main thing I would not be using it but then again you can run it under parallels or dual boot if you like into Windows. This is a laptop I though we where talking about or did I get that wrong ?
The funny thing is Vista is mostly a copy of the OSX look and I for one would say to any serious musos to stick with XP for 6 months at least.

Anyway here is a link to an article by a guy who is a supposed Windows expert trying to use a Mac for his day to day work. He is a month into it and he tells it like it is for him warts and all.. this link it to his latest "part" make sure u link back to his part 1 article to get a fair balance

To the original poster I again would say if you just want firewire 800 then throw in a PCMCIA card to you XP machine as long as thats all you want and are happy with XP.
