A quick track I did to try out "step sequencing" in Live 3.0. No drum loops used, only single drum hits that I looped on 16ths. Then I used clip envelopes to "step sequence" beats. I got so inspired by this technique so I did the same with the syth lines. No synths used either, only short notes from the preachermans voice. Looped them, tuned them, and used clip envelopes to create melodies with "step sequencing" by transpose.
8O Even the bass line was done with the vocal sample??!?!? If so, can you elaborate a bit on that one? It sounds like you have a "click" on the attack of the bass. Was it a snippit from the vocal to add a "pluck" sound to it?

I ask because it is phenom...the whole thing is incredible! Awesome stuff :D
No, the bassline is a plain sample of an acoustic stand up bass (from the GareBAnd sample library). The parts I made from snippets of the vocal sample are those hard synths that keep arpeggiationg on 16th notes all around. I looped a short sound from the guys voice, tuned it in the sample window and wrote in volume clip envelopes for the timing and pitch clip envelopes for the melodies. The drums were done by looping one single drum hit (kick or snare) in sample editor and then I used the pen tool in and penned "clip envelopes" for volume to bring in drum hits at certain beats (that's why I called it "step sequencing").

I'm glad you liked the piece ;-) I was pretty amazed myself about how hard the beat sounds. Very "drum-machine-like"... reminds me of some old KLF stuff ;-) I've never been able to achieve that hard-sequenced sound when working in Logic and other midi sequencers. Maybe it's only possible with analogue sequencers and this "step sequencing" Live technique?

Oh, there's a hihat or shaker loop that is just played back straight as a loop.

Are damn great ...
Planninng any import CD releases for Australia.
I really liked those live sets ;) ...
Some truly great timbral tweaks in there and nice spacial frequency depth.
Get two thumbs up from down here in Australia.
Dead Brilliant is all I can say.
Keep it up .
Funny you mentioned the Orb 'cause I can hear little hints of Orb ,FSOL ,WilliamOrbit,OzrichTentacles,EatStatic and then some.
You definately have your own strong style within the genre though.
I didn't find it derivative in anyway (which is meant to be a huge compliment I might add)..
So where can I buy some CD's from ?

Well done m8. A fine track indeed. Kinda reminds me of my style a bit. Your track sounds kinda like Thievery Corporation on too many hallucinogens. Good work......

I'm looking for feedback on my tracks, especially 131 bpm. This was the first time I had attempted a dance track like this. I'm pretty proud of it, but I don't have any real experience in the genre so let me know....
The other track listed is sort of a dub/rap instrumental.
thanks
can you say screaming filters!?!?!

A/V piece in Live

Post by Mbazzy » Thu Apr 22, 2004 8:37 am

This - http://users.skynet.be/fa317632/fisheye/8mm.wmv - is the final version [ just the credits ar elacking ] of a commissionned A/V piece ... we had to do an "abstract narrative piece that wouldn't scare people away for the national Heritage Day" , theme was "It's all in the family" ...

We only had 2 weeks to go trough 9 hours of digitalised 8 mm footage, make the visuals and audio .. so there was quite a timeconstraint and we don't consider this our best we could have done ...

Every seperate athmosphere was -on the audio side -improvised against the footage, in AudioMulch using custom Mulch instrument . When the entire visuals were ready, I recorded everything in Ableton Live, and played the recorded clips live -again - with addition of a few Ableton efx.

The arrangement was than carefully edited in the arranger and mixed down in Ableton as well ...

For A/V previewing and sync checking I used VirtualDub
