If your MBP has the buzzing noise workaround fix

Post by serotoninsteve » Sun Dec 10, 2006 11:50 pm

Hi,
I bought a MBP CD (rev1) second hand last week,
and of course it made the buzzing noise at the left.
As it's still under waranty, brought it in to apple,
and got a new logicboard and firmware.
The battery gets exchanged next week directly from Apple.
Well,
the "fix" brought nothing,
the noise is still there
and the firmware update fights against the old battery and shuts down the book at about 96% batterie life,
before it didn't made that.

While checking a lots of forums around,
came across this tool: CHUD, a developers tool from Apple:
http://developer.apple.com/tools/download/
You can set up a small menu item at the right and quickly disable one core and stop the noise.
Photobooth does the same, but this is a better way.

I personally bring in my book again tomorrow,
let's see what they can do,
hopeing for a new C2D.

But in case your book is out of warranty,
it's a least a good workaround to stop the noise while surfing, and doing other stuff, it's still fast enough.
Just wanted to share this with everybody.

Greetings

the other way to do it if you didnt disable your widgets, is load up the mirror widget (wich uses your camera) - no idea why but it turns of the buzz.

Which tool are you using? CHUD is actually a collection of apps for different purposes....

Just install the package,
then look in system preferences,
there is a processor tab now.
Open it and mark show in menu bar.
You'll get a small icon on the top right of your screen,
on the left beside the bluetooth symbol.

I'll wait for my new battery, should arrive this week.
The genius said the buzz could be from the faulty batterie,
I told him that it's bollocks,
then he said that I should come back with the new battery if it doesn't stop then, so they could test it a bit more.
Let's see what they can do, still hopeing for a C2D.

Ah, ok, I see what you mean.

Unfortunately, I can't jive with that, though... I'd rather deal with a whiney laptop than just one core. ;) Maybe I'll grab this mirror widget..

Then you can open photobooth, that does about the same.
Hope they can at least fix mine.

why don't you just get the logic board replaced so you don't have to f*ck around wth your machine to make it work properly. just take it back in and they will put another logic board in.

it's not that simple. You can be out of a macbook for 1-2weeks. It's not like they're gonna pop a logic board in there at the store, and they'll only give you a lender if you bought it from their store.

That's what I'll do,
I'll anoy them until it works.
If they can't fix it,
I want a replacement.
I doubt that a second board will fix it.
How is yours, it's the same as mine?
Is yours fixed, I mean no more noise at all?
Well, not to have my book for over a week annoys me also of course,
but I have still my good old Toshiba, 4 years now 24/24 and no noise at all.

I finally fixed mine, by applying the old advice given out at this apple discussions thread. I chose to remove the kernel extension altogether, though... performance is more important than battery life, especially when the damn thing only gets 2 hours to begin with. :)

Also, fellow MBP owners out there might be interested in fancontrol, a free app that lets you adjust the fan operating conditions from the system preferences. My machine is now running faster (and cooler) than it ever has!

Thanks sqook,
I've read the whole thread, long read with a lot of info.
I'll wait what they can do with my book,
when they can't fix it or replace I'll try the kext mod too.
Fancontrol is great, runs already cooler now.
Anyway thanks for the link, searched a lot but didn't cross this one.

What speed you have set minimum?2000rpm? or.....
And there is any problem for the machine if you run this app always?
Cheers

I've mine set to 2100rpm,
lower threshold at 50C° and upper at 70C° and it gets barely warm,
even with a Live set at 70%,
shows about 56C° internal temp.
I've to say that they removed the exessive quantity off thermal grease wich they applied from stock during the first logicboard swap,
that already made a difference.
I don't think it does something bad to the machine,
the new C2Duo's are running 2000 default,
that explains that they run cooler.
I really doubt that the C2D runs cooler rom itself.

I set mine at the minimum for all three bars.... 1000RPM for base speed, 40degC for lower thresh, and 70degC for upper thresh. I find that this is good for keeping a pretty cool system with a small amount of background noise. Under these settings, my mbp is idling at about 54degC per core, and will go up to 86degC during sustained, 100% CPU loads. However, before I installed this app, I could get it up to 94degC if I really pushed it. :)

I've found that putting the lower threshhold to 60degC (with the same settings for base speed and upper threshhold) also really cuts down on fan noise, and the heat isn't really that bad.

Also, for those of you that are curious, at 100degC your machine will automatically shutdown as a safety measure. Normal operating temperature should be in the 60-80degC range, but the Core Duo 2 chips supposedly run about 10degC cooler on average.
