midi sync problem

Post by valley » Thu Apr 08, 2004 5:48 pm

Hello,

When I try to sync live to an external midi clock the tempo does not remain stable.. I've tried the suggestion in the faq (lower audiobuffer) but it didn't solve the problem.
I'm using Live 3.0.4 on a 1ghz ibook and the FW410 for midi in.

any ideas on what's causing the problem?

thanks,

valentijn

Well for me... I put the midi latency to a negative... and it seemed to help stabalize the problem a bit more. Not certain why though... but when I record loops they sound much more natural and not like they are being warped like crazy....

i have this problem as well. i have my korg es-1 set as my midi clock and running it in through m-audios uno usb/midi interface. the tempo fluctuates all over. i've tried messing with the latency with no luck. any other ideas?

i experimented more with this today and i found that the bpm doesn't fluctuate unless you are playing samples, what would this mean? audio latency issue or something?

ok more experimenting....adjusting my audio latency properly seems to help, but now i think there is a very very slight shift in tempo still going on, that is making a slight flutter sound in my loops that i don't hear if i am just playing them with live alone. would a better sound card fix this do you think?

I've recently bought Logic Express. So I thought I'd try to sync logic to an external device just to check. The same problem occured. The BPM jumps up and down. So the problem is more than likely not caused by live or logic.
But I have no idea what the problem could be or what could be causing it???

hmm

what kind of soundcard are you using for your audio, i'm assuming the FW 410?

Hi Valentijn [long time no see ;-) ]

What external midiclock are you using .. I've heard repeatedly that eg the Korg Electribe series send shabby midiclock ...

If you're sure about the clock, only thing that can be faulted is the FW410 I guess ...

Hey Mbazzy,

It has indeed been a long time :)

My external midi clock is a Roland MC-303. But it seems you're right about the FW410. I've just plugged in my MT4 midi interface and everything seems to work fine with that interface..
Miljaaar.. would have been handy if i'd only had to use the FW410..

Thanks for the help!

Maybe this helps as well :
Mac: Any problem / recommended versions

Q: I'm getting erratic problems on my Mac. This could either be crashes, error messages, problems detecting my audio- or MIDI device or other unpredictable difficulties. What's the reason for this?

A: In most cases problems like the above can be fixed by making sure that your system is up to date. Use the latest versions of the M-Audio device driver, the audio/MIDI software and Firmware (BootROM) and ROM version for your Mac.

The version of the Operating System is also a critical factor and should be chosen carefully. Although it is a good idea to keep your Operating System up to date, it can sometimes be a bad idea to install the latest OS update right when it is released. The reason for this is, that Apple occasionally changes the way audio- or MIDI devices are implemented which requires hardware vendors like M-Audio to update their device drivers to work correctly with this new version of the OS. There is a natural delay between the release of a new OS version and until the development and testing of adapted devices drivers are finished for all M-Audio products.

Currently, the recommended MacOS versions for most M-Audio products are:

- MacOS X, Panther: 10.3.2 (free update from earlier versions of 10.3)

- MacOS X, Jaguar: 10.2.8 (free update from earlier versions of 10.2)

- MacOS 9: 9.2.2 (free update from earlier versions of OS 9)

Always check this document when planning to update your OS as M-Audio will frequently update the current OS recommendations.

(M-Audio's 10.3.3 tests have not yet been completed)

i've setup my audio buffer correctly now like i said above and now i have live as the master clock and it seems to sync with the durm machine fine. still doesn't work right the other way around but this is a good enough solution for me. good luck!
