fabfilter twin or operator

Post by gregorythis » Mon Dec 25, 2006 7:05 pm

which one do you think i should choose.

right now all i have it automat and crystal.

im leaning towards the fabfilter twin because it seems to have a lot more to offer and is cheaper.

but im ready to have you all put some ideas in.

thanks

Sort of apples and oranges here. Twin is more a VA with some lovely filters, whereas Operator is an FM synth. Twin will plug in to any host, should you be inclined to run something other than Live, whereas Operator and Live are joined at the hip... you can't use Operator outside Live.

I've got both, but if I had to choose one of them it would definitely be Twin.*

* One thing to be mindful of... FabFilter does not allow licence transfers. If you ever decide you don't like Twin any more, too bad, you're stuck with it.

If you're looking for a good deal on a softsynth...go try Toxic from ImageLine...they will be offering it for $39 in the next 12-24 hours (but the offer is only good for 24 hours). It's a very nice sounding synth with lots of good presets to play around with and for $39, you can't go wrong.

I read that they were going to do the "Yard Sale" thing again tonight or tomorrow...just keep hitting their site: http://www.flstudio.com

id go with twin. i have both and get far more pleasure and satisfaction from twin. its easier to get under the hood and make something happen. operators good. i have three main soft synths in my set up audiobassline pro, twin and operator. out of all them operator is used 5 - 10% of the time.

If you're comfortable with FM synthesis, I'd go with operator -- the interface is very nice, especially if you're just starting out with softsynths. I actually think overall operator has more to offer, as FM synthesis can go farther (albeit with a lot more work) than subtractive synthesis. Fabfilter has a great interface relative to most synths, but it is less intuitive than operator (IMO). However, it's much easier to get nice sounds out of fabfilter twin, and the filter in operator pales in comparison to the filters in twin. Also, in terms of synthesis methods, subtractive is much easier to get your head around, and if you're using automat, you're already familiar with it. Of the two, operator is my bread and butter, but that might just be because I had it first. Finally, in my experience, operator has lower CPU usage in many cases (but I haven't had twin for all that long).

Overall they really are very different synths and complement each other nicely; I am glad to have them both. What we really need is for ableton to license fabfilter's filters and put them in operator :-)
