Can't Start Audio Device

Post by deeplfo » Thu Apr 22, 2004 4:59 am

Hi,
When I have Cubase 5.0 VST set with audio enabled via the M-Audio ASIO drivers, then whenever I try to start Live it gives an error complaining that it can't open the audio device. If I disable audio from Cubase then Live seems to be ok. I have an M-Audio 2496 Audiophile card on a Dell P4 XP machine with loads of RAM and HD. Can I not have both these two apps coexist?

Thanks,
Mohsen

I'd be interested in hearing more input on this thread, as well.

First question would be...

Is Cubase 5.0 VST not rewire capable? Wouldn't LIVE open as a rewire slave if Cubase 5 was a rewire host?

My issues are that I use Wavelab and Recyle to edit and rex beats while i'm composing in Live/Reason. When Live is opened first, and uses the ASIO driver (M-Audio Delta 66/Omni IO), then Wavelab and Recycle can't use ASIO. If I try to use ASIO with Wavelab or Recycle before opening Live, then Live says it can't find the M-Audio device.

Isn't ASIO what they call multi-client? Doesn't that mean that multiple apps can access the driver simultaneously?

I'm getting around it by having Wavelab and Recycle use WDM, but i'd prefer the better latency and sound quality I get from ASIO.

Any info is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That it does, i.e. open in slave mode, but then I get the problem you mention below, i.e. Live can't use the M-Audio device.

Anyone from Ableton reading this can you please verify this? Should I report this as a bug? It seems that other apps are OK if Cubase is using the M-Audio device, but Live is not.

Help please.

ASIO isn't inherently multi-client, it's up to whoever and however the driver is implemented. Also, there are different ways that a driver could behave in a multi-client way. Some multi-client drivers will allow different apps to access different channels if they are available but not share same channels. Other drivers which are truly multi-client will allow sharing of channels/streams/drivers between apps even when they are the same. This all depends what channels/streams are available and how the driver locks apps out. Mixtreme drivers for example are truly multi-client, allowing sharing of streams and assignemnt of different drivers across the I/O range available ie; ASIO/WDM/GSIF/etc If the driver doesn't allow allocation of streams/channels/drivers between apps and you only have a 2 I/O system then you are especially stuffed.

Isn't ASIO what they call multi-client? ... taneously?

Here is the response I got from M-Audio :
contrary to popular belief, there actually is no such thing as a
multi-client ASIO driver. You will have to use Rewire to use the two
programs together.
