POINTLESS AUTOMATION?!

Post by Oortha » Wed Jan 03, 2007 6:48 am

Im recording from the clip view in to the arrangement.

as i record i modulate certain parameters via a midi controller. once finished and i wish to tweak such automations manually, all those i have controlled via midi are brown automation lines instead of red and they become unread and pointless in the arrangement playback.

anyone know how i can switch these parameters back on without having to take them off the midi map?

yep.

hit he red button at the top of the transport bar

it looks like horizontal lines, as does the arrange view

this button literally means "back to arrangement" - and means Live will now playback what is in the arrange page

somehow you've triggered or done something whilst not in record mode
- this overrides the arrangement & either plays a hybrid of arrangement & session view, or playback is entirely influenced by the session settings you currently have, depending on how many tracks you have altered.

does that help?

yes nice one. but. after turning the red lines button off so the automation works, as i begin to play back the arrangement the red button comes back on again. and then again! and on some occassions just refuses to be turned off!?

That usually means that some MIDI controller is "leaking" info. Any chance you've got MIDIYoke installed and all the ports active?

no MIDIYoke is installed.
the button appears to turn back to red every time the playback passes another automation dot on the arrangement. when moving across a red automation line it stays red until again, it hits another dot...

That sounds mysterious. Best I can recommend is to use MIDI-Ox to monitor what's going on with your MIDI

And you're sure you are not triggering anything in the session view?

very sure. but it refuses to behave. ive now just had to delete the entire midi map in order for my automation to actually be recognised.

to isolate the problem, start by unplug all the controllers

also, make sure you don't have the computer keyboard enabled as a midi device
(ie - the little keyboard at the top right of the screen should be off)

see if the problem still occurs

it is one of your vsti that hava a paratmeter that auto-auscillate. Some (a lot!!!) OF VSTI DO THAT. It is a major problem for live.

Here I talk about it:

A simple solution:

Use a cigarette filter or samething like that to make the F-10 key stuck while playback. So you can hear the previosely recorded modulations.

If you render the session to wav, don´t forget to press the red button (or hit the F-10 key) in order to hear modulations on the rendered file.
