Automation becomes grayed out?

I wasn't able to find this information anywhere in any tutorials or manuals. Can anyone explain why the automation sometimes goes from bright red to dark brown / gray? When this happens, I can't edit the automation. The effects are still active but I can't change them. Particularly, I have had this happen while editing volume control or automation in VSTs. The only solution I have found is to close my current project, open a different project with the same VST, and then reopening my current project.

Sounds like you need the "Back to Arrangement" button. It is the second to the right of the global record button. check it out
