THE NEXT STEP

Post by montrealbreaks » Sat May 08, 2004 5:10 am

OK, I have recieved a response from Anita Lotterschmid from Ableton. They indicated that they will support us as well as they can. We must bear in mind that Ableton is a small company, and any and all support we get from them is really appreciated and totally genuine!

Anita indicated that they could not provide money, but could help by providing promo material like T-shirts, demo CDs, posters, stickers etc. They also offered to post a short text about the tour with dates, venues and line-up and an image on the event section.

Finally (and most significantly) they have offered to provide a few copies of Live as door prizes or something.

I will continue discussion with Anita and keep her and the rest of Ableton informed of our progress.

Which brings me to the next step: Now that we have a schedule, we must get out there and find those venues! As stated before, paying gigs are perfect, but if we have to rent then so be it - just keep it small and cheap! I plan to burn a CD with two tracks from each of the performers who have provide URLs of their music. I know some have already expressed an preference, but for each performer, please indicate if you have a preference for what's your best music and we will put it on the CDs. Burn these CDs, include both mine and your own contact info (all artists should have my email address, real name and phone number), and hand 'em out to get us those venues!

Also, tomorrow I am going to music stores with tailored copies of the letter requesting support. Music retailers who carry Ableton Live will benefit from this tour as well, and we should see if they can assist us at all.

Please take the letter to Ableton I sent to all of the performers, and tailor the address and text to local music stores. Print it off, change the signature and whatnot to your own, and take it to the local music stores to solicit support.

These tasks sound like a LOT of work, but they need to happen. If we get a no response from a city at this stage, I will just plan to bypass it completely. I haven't set a deadline yet, but expect one to come.

Next post: ON TO THE STICKY POINT:

Money.

I will be honest and say I cannot bankroll the up front costs of this tour by myself. I also don't expect any one else to do so. Therefore, we have a few options for getting the necessary money up front and (again) I would like a vote by Tuesday 11 May at Midnight on which of the following financing schemes is preferred:

1: Each person responsible for costs associated with their own town: That means, I am responsible for the venue in Montreal, and wether I get a free venue or not is up to me. I would also cover the deposit for a private venue if no free venue or paying gig is available. This goes for each person in their home town. Where there's two in a town, you split the costs 50/50. If you can get a sponsor, great. If not, too bad. Money taken in goes to venue first to pay balance, then reimbursement for the host performer, then to gas money & veh rental. The remainder (if any) is divided amongst performers equally. I will cover the vehicle rental costs on a credit card, and we all pay for fuel equally enroute. If there's any money left over, I get reimbursed for the vehicle rental.

Advantage: Each performer has direct incentive to keep costs down, and if one performer is broke, then that's just more incentive to get a free joint or paying gig.

Disadvantage: we may end up missing a town if a performer can't secure a venue with his own money, guys in towns with 2 resident performers have it easier.

2. We calculate total costs, factoring in EVERYTHING (all rented venues, vehicle, fuel, food etc, minus the money from paying gigs and sponsorship after it's added to the pool), and divide by number of performers. Everybody pays the same ammount up front.

Advantage: It's totally fair

Disadvantage: Some of us are probably broke and can't pony up ANYTHING. This means we could have to cut the tour one stop, or lend a guy some cash.

Again, votes by Tuesday at midnight please... And start looking for venues on your respective date!

cosmosuave,

You got any contacts at Steve's or L&M for promotional support? I asked SBT, but they really just sell to big post facilities now.

Hey Mtl Breaks... When will you be sending the letter?

I am totally cool with that option....

No contacts but I have dropped a fair bit of $$$ at L&M and a bit at Steve's... I will also try Saved by Technology and Carbon Computing a Mac store that sells Ableton and audio gear.

Hey MtlBreaks.... How are you getting to Bawston? If you are renting the van from Mtl I could hook up with you for the drive. Also I will be mixing two tracks tonight at work and hopefully have them done to make available for the disc to be distributed that is alittle more representative of my style... The stuff on my site was for clients....

Also how is this for a tour name.....

Abletons North East Beats & Beeps Tour.... Yay or Nay? Any other ideas?

I have been granted the vaction time off from work for this as well...

OK, sure you can get a ride with me. No worries, I assumed it would be that way. We'll make arrangements to meet via email closer to the date.

Also, good on ya for the music, I will wait until you have some ready for us.

My plan for the next week is:
1. Mon-Fri evenings, phone local venues, and find out "who's who" for dropping off demos (which will happen the NEXT week)...
2. Get the necessary info from Canada Customs regarding work permits for the various US performers, and contacting US customs for the same issue
3. Drop off the letters soliciting support from three music stores on Monday-Wednesday
4. Price out the van (insurance, rental, kilometers for a 7 person mini-van)

I will be burning off the demos this Friday or Saturday, and dropping them off next weekend. I will post which tracks I burn from everybody's site. If ya have a preference, again let us know.

Come to think of it, if anybody has any other options, please let us know... I would hate to be a dick-tator here, and if there's an easier way to do this, I would love to know.

ryan/quandry/charlottesville here. I'm going out to get us a venue for the 30th of June, but am having trouble getting mp3's of everyones stuff on disc. Rahlo's stuff seems like I can't save it to the hard drive, and even though I joined garageband, I can't seem to be able to actually download montrealbreak's stuff onto my harddrive either. Cosmosuave's wesite just loads up and I can't find anyway to get to the mp3s (or anything else)--I have flash, and it works. Any suggestion/hints? I got me, crt, ducktail, I wan't to represent (and hear) everyone's stuff--a little help here. Looking forward to it.

Same here.

Alternatively, I can courier a CD to you, OR put mp3s on an FTP site.

ryan/quandry here---yup, hit me with the email mp3's at rdh3t@hotmail.com

i think I can handle attachments up to 10 Mb, so you might have to hit me with two emails to get three songs to me (thats what I'm shooting for, three songs of each performer). The sooner the better, as my shoe-in venue is booked that night so I got to do a bit of promo and braggin about how bad-ass we all are to get us into what will be a better venue for this show anyway. The cd should definitely help. I might throw down a promo sheet with graphics from everyone's site, weblinks, brief descriptions stolen from your sites, etc. Maybe I'll email it to everyone once I get it done (hopefully tonite)--or is there already something like this that someone has done? Montrealbreaks, ducktail, and cosmosuave--if you feel so inclined, feel free to email me any images that might be cool to have on a promo sheet and/or flyer. Thanks y'all

Thanks Montrealbreaks. I've got the flyer/promo sheet started. I'm planning on having everyone's name/logo, a picture of them (or from their website), and a brief description (jacked and/or edited down from website bios), and web and tune links for each artist. QUESTION: what is the roster?? Here'w who I have so far:

Rahlo (Black Soil Project): got your logo and first screen shot of you with the condensor mic. Mp3's coming my way via email (hopefully)

Quandry: thats me, I'm covered.

Montrealbreaks: pics and mp3's coming my way via email--do you have a logo/nametag image?

CRT (aka brittney sparse): Got the pixelated brittney image and bs logo. Any particular tunes (on the shorter tip) to put on the demo disc?

Ducktail: got the mp3s, but no graphics or weblink to any sort of bio or traditional webpage--any help here, ducktail? If not, I can at least get the songs on the demo and the link to the mp3 site--sounds like your bio might help with the men without hats connection you mentioned.

Tjwett: Are you on the roster--any weblinks to images/bio /mp3s?

Cosmosuave: I can't seem to get anywhere on your website, but I do have your logo. any direct bio or mp3 links?

ANYONE I'm missing? By my count, we have 7 performers??? Yes or no? Everyone coming to C-ville? I'm hoping to get this done in the next day or two to secure a gig here, and to share the image with y'all for comments/edits and for your own use in promo. hit me up at rdh3t@hotmail.com with links, images, mp3s, the works.

Thanks,

Ryan

Well, let's see...

I have had a couple of people PM me asking to join the tour, and others who were originally down who have been conspicuously absent from the forum and the emails sent.

Bigbone dropped out, and I think you're missing Brautigan from Philly - but I haven't heard from Brautigan for a while. What`s goin on man?

I think we can only take 7 performers reasonably - that's one van (two up front, three second row, three third row). Also consider playing time - with a set from 9 to 2 am, we are talking 5 hours. Assuming that EVERYBODY plays EVERY gig, we're in for short sets. I have developed a spreadsheet to show who's playing where, but I need the data to populate it. Folks who are or are not playing particular gigs need to make themselves known for planning and promotion purposes. This is a critical requirement, and it's coming fast.

WORD. ROLL CALL! Here's what I'm in for:

Quandry/Ryan (Charlottesville, VA): I'll be able to do the c-ville, philly, nyc last leg of the tour--none of the other dates. I will be driving my crappy suby wagon up to philly and nyc, so I won't ever need a space in the van, and can even take a person or two and some gear up from c-ville to the big cities.

I think one other topic not yet mentioned but vitally important is food--the more we can milk out of venues the better, and a good meal for free is always sweet. I know I'm definitely going to push for free food for all performers here, though there is a balance between what the venue will offer in terms of food and money. That said, a $10-12 entree and some free drinks around the horn is worth a lot to everyone, no? i.e. it might be worth getting paid $50 less or something (just an example here) in exchange for free food and some free booze. just something to think about, especially for those booking gigs--free food is good food.
