Help needed (Fw 410/ External Hard drive) conflict

Post by knitros » Mon May 10, 2004 4:05 pm

Hi,
I've been using Ableton live with no problems for a while now.
My internal hard drive in my laptop started struggling as my set got larger and larger so i went and bought a 160 gb Lacie external firewire hard drive.
Unfortunately it isnt co existing wth my soundcard M-audio Fw 410.
Whenver i i play a project of the Lacie firewire hard drive the M-audio FW 410 stops working.
I get sound for about 5-10 seconds and then ableton stops.
The play buttton then no longer works.
Has anyone had a similar problem?
Any advice would be greatly appreaciated.
Have 2 gigs on on the weekend and need audio playing of external hard drive.
Thanks for reading.

are you PC/Mac? - how do you have it set up - daisy chain or seperate?

On my PC laptop I got a PCMCIA-> firewire adapter and gave the machine 2 more firewire ports, it cost about £25 UK from an online computer parts shop

But I find it's still better having one from the iLink (PC on board 4pin FW in case your a mac man) as well as for some reason I was getting audio clicks when I had them both running of the same PCMCIA card, but the other way it's solid as a rock

My powerbook has 2 firwire ports anyway so I don't have that problem on mac, but the PCMCIA solution should still work for mac.

Thanks for the reply Forge.
Im on PC laptop.
Sony Vaio FRV 26.
Ive tried them daisychained to the Vaios firewire port.
And also tried a separate pcmcia cardbus firewire adaptor.
(Firewire 410 attached to Vaios built in port and Lacie attached to cardbus firewire card)
Both soundcard and harddrive work at the same time but soundcard stops working if audio is being streamed of the Firewire hard drive..
Only thing i can think is maybe there is an incompatibility with the pcmcia cardbus firewire adaptor i bought..it was a kouwell.
What brand card was the one you bought for your laptop?
Any suggestions on a good cardbus firewire adaptor to work with m-audio fw410 will be greatly appreaciated.
Cheers.

I just looked and it's 'ieee 1394 cardbus PC card' made in taiwan, no name on it - no frills!

suppose it's possible your system doesn't like the one you've got, or the drivers - have you tried them the othe way round? (HD on iLink and 410 on cardbus?) suppose that's obvious though

don't know, sounds weird, I really thought that would solve it :(

have you had this problem with other programs too? done a defrag on the drive? (although if it's new shouldn't need to)

also, my HD is USB2 as well as FW, so I'd be able to use it that way (though I don't) - maybe if it's still new you could think about backing it and getting a different on with USB 2 - Or even getting an internal 7200 rpm drive for your laptop - I've done that and I don't really use my External one much these days as it's adequate - the iomega drive came with a copy of Norton ghost which allowed me to clone the existing one (takes ages, but you just leave it over night or something and only have to do it once) so apart from having to re-authorise alot of my software it was a straight swap - although I had to run the drive USB2 while it was cloning as the firewire drivers didn't seem to run on dos level which is what ghost runs on, (even though they were supposed to)

latest 410 drivers? Okay I'll quit trying to help now because I'm not really able to I haven't got a clue

my 410 driver version is 5.10.0.5018 if that's any help
