(OT) Blackberry's, Backjacks, Palm's etc..

I own a Blackberry Pearl. Why is it that these phones can not connect to an existing wireless network to check email, surf the web etc? Instead we have to pay the phone companies all this extra money for a feature that seems like it is already built into the phone?

Can some tech savvy board member explain this? Is there an actual limitation to the technology, or is it just another way for big corporations to bilk us out of more money?

It seems logical that my phone should be able to connect to any wireless network, like the one in my house, at the coffee shop, at work, etc.. Has anyone ever heard of any kind of hack that would allow this?

Care to enlighten me?

Hmm.... it just occurred to me, they don't use WiFi?

I'm guessing that is why. Still, some enlightenment would be nice.

it's logical to see in the specs if that model it's WiFi enabled! if not you prolly could add it thru a sd wifi card. not sure i have a k-jam

The Pearl doesn't have wifi, so you're stuck with whatever data services your carrier provides.

to me apple today unveiled that pdas are nice for them too, and presented their first model, here starts windows mobile vs iphone ...
microsoft just got like ten years of experience in developing mobile systems as advantage

Um, I think you are forgetting that Apple created one of the first PDAs years ago called the Newton... so the iPhone is actually their second (and long time a comin') model.

HA-HA! 10 years of making "smartphones" that not very many people feel comfortable using. Apple just blew them completly out of the water!

Apple just does things right.

I own a Windows "smartphone" running WM5- smartphone edition and can squarely say that MS has learned nothing over the last ten years. The OS is a buggy, unintuitive mess! Can't wait to get my hands on an iPhone to see how the OS responds. Too bad their data service is gonna be so sloooow.

I never much liked the Smartphone format, but I've got an MS PocketPC (an XDA Mini-S - also known as an HTC Wizard, an M3000, an MDA Vario, a Qtek 9100, and no doubt various other names) which I still find very impressive.

I've owned other PDAs previously, including a Newton and a couple of different Palms, but none of them really impressed me (even for the time).

Anyway, there are going to be be people who love the iPhone just because it says Apple on it. And there are are going to be be people who hate the iPhone just because it says Apple on it.

Me, I'll take a look at what it does and what it costs (and what else is on the market) after it has been available in the UK for a while, and see if it's a good option.

But I can't say I've got much use for multitouch on a device that I invariably work with my thumb!

i don't forget it, i don't know it! because that newton you are talking is not far comparable even to a 6 years old pocketpc, it's just an antique toy..
there is a huge gap between the newton and the iphone.. where they been all those years?

i'd have nothing against apple products, if they 'd dont say and let belive to all the macfans with their commarcials that they are revolutioning the world.. in this case with a product that is a.... pocketmac..

my think is that apple noticed the big increase of marked about pdas of these years, specifically windows mobile pocketpc phones and windows mobile smarthpones so they are triing to jump in the boat with their usual fascinating way...

Seriously, you are missing the point if you don't see the big picture here. But you know what, just wait and see. You were probably one of the ones that said "iPod, big deal, there's other mp3 players out there with bigger drives like the Nomad, etc." but look how much the iPod has completely changed the entire music industry. Even the word Podcast came from the iPod. THAT is a revolution and those of us that track these things (Futurists) can see that the iPhone is going to be an even bigger revolution... not just for the cellphone industry, but for general computing as well.
