Dj'ing with Live 6- what to do with the warp markers?

Hi,

Just started having a play around with Dj'ing with Live 6 but not quite sure what to do with the warp markers. Live seems to put them kind of mid way through the kick rather than at the start of the waveform. A mate told me I should find the first kick, zoom in to the start of the waveform, set that to 1, then 'warp from here straight' , then go to the end of the track where it's drifted out a bit and drag the nearest warp marker to the start of the kick again. This is quite tricky though and doesn't seem to be working all the time.

Should i just leave Live's markers alone? Any suggestions would be welcome.

- just be consistent (start, middle, end of waveform) to what you like to hear
- trust your ears
- warp to a beat you know is good and true
- go warp 100 songs and see what questions you have then

warping is great but it takes some practice to get good at it.

Hey Sineman,

For electronic stuff, what your friend suggested is more or less the best method.

For non-electronic music, try this: Click on a warp marker, hit crtl-A (on pc) to select all warp markers, zoom in, and adjust the first marker with your left-right arrow keys. This will adjust all warp markers in the same way as you adjusted your first.

I DJ with live often using 3-5 clips per song... I still haven't figured out an easy way to save all the clips.

If you drag multiple clips to a folder you get all the track settings (something I dont want). I wish there was an easier way. These days, out of laziness, I jsut save my set every time I play.. If I want a particular group of clips, I go back to that saved set (date in title) and drill down the the tracks to see the individual clips... slightly annoying on a 12" laptop in the dark.

I have always wondered if I should set warp markers to the beginning of the beat's waveform or the peak of the kick. I kind of feel like the peak of the kick will mean that I get more consistent alignment of beats even where a kick might have a long attack and a short decay but I started warping from the beginning long ago and now I'm afraid to change to what I feel will be a better results.

Ah well.

I think beginning sounds better if you're using complex, seems to not chop up the transient like it does if you place the marker in the middle of the hit.

There was a pretty lengthy discussion on both methods last month on ALDJ.

Hmmm, interesting!

I rarely use complex though. I usually use pitch change.
