is it possible to merge midi clips?

I'm slowly stabbing my way through understanding ableton after many years with pro tools.. and midi isn't my strong suit... but i was wondering

Is there a way to combine the midi parts of one clip with another?

I have a hi hat part I recorded with one type of impulse and then a kick snare beat with another. Now that I can change samples within impulse, I was wondering if there was a way to put the hihat clip in the same clip as the stuff with my KickSnare beat

It would be easy if it were possible to cut and paste in clip views, but I can't seem to figure out how to do that...

well... there is a way to do it the clip view... but your better off jumping to the arrangement view, to a blank space, and just copy and paste the miditracks there... and arrange them there... then consolidate to make it the 1 clip!!

I could be wrong, but I think this might be what he is asking: Say you have a 2 bar midi clip where a kick is on each 1/4 and mapped to C1. Then you have another 2 bar clip with highhats on each 1/8 note mapped to say, E3. Is it possible to merge the two clips so you have one 2 bar clip which has the two instruments ?

That's more or less what I'm asking...
Although I really just want the notes in the single clip (I figure I can change sample for a particular note)
And the arrangement window solution is understandable,
But I'd love to be able to do it all within the clip window, which seems more intuitive solution to the problem
Is it not possible to cut and paste notes in the clip window?
If not, is there any reason why you can't?

Copy-paste should work fine between clips?

As for "merging" midi clips, by setting multiple midi track outputs ot a single track and recording a new clip there should create a new merged one.

Unfortunately, as someone noted the other day, it appears to not be possible to choose the paste position inside the clip view window!

You can effectively paste into the arrangement track itself, if you can work over there.

I suppose bouncing works. I was just hoping for a quicker and more elegant solution.

It seems like a missing piece of very basic functionality
I would like to be able to open the clip editor and paste a chord or a sequence of notes into it without having to re-route tracks or move them some place (the arrangment window) other than the place where I am working (the clip editor)

Actually this is easy to do in clip view...

Double click on the clip with the hihat track...

Hold the left button of the mouse and drag the cursor to select all the notes you want copied... then press ctr+c

Now double click the clip with the kick pattern. press ctr+v. You will probably need to use the arrow key to place the midi notes where they need to be, but this is easy.

midi copy/paste follows the loop braces and start-marker, so before you copy, set the loop braces some round number of measures and position the start-marker at the beginning.

in the destination clip, make sure that the loop braces are the same number of measures and that the start marker is at the right position (probably beginning of the braces)

you don't have to follow this exactly for copy & paste, but it will save you headaches.
also, for copy/paste of notes that come in slightly early, slightly before the start of a measure, you can slightly offset the loop-braces while leaving the start marker at an even measure division ... when you paste somewhere, just make sure that the loop brace is also slightly offset in your destination as well.
this works fine within clips and clip-to-clip, and even works at different measures ... everything is just relative to the braces.

you do this with the loop brackets in clip view.

but as mentioned

Consolidate is the way to do this, drag to arrange, consolidate the two clips into one, drag it back to session.
