Bad MIDI implementation Live!

Post by Avax » Wed Jan 10, 2007 12:21 pm

Is there any way Live can pass MIDI messages on to a VST instrument, so that both Live and VST have their MIDI response respectively?
Example:
I am using Korg Kontrol as my hardware controller.
And I can control eithr Live or VST.
Live holds MIDI messages, so VST does not react to Kontrol49.
Why is that so?
Same MIDI channel, same parameters set to both Live and VST, but only 'active window' reacts.

Second problem:
If I am using a VST and I have my MIDI clip recorded with information, for example 'program change', VST responds to this message only if AUTO button is activated.
OK, you would say.
But in AUTO mode, one can NOT hear VST instrument playing.
That works well only with hardware synthesizer plugged in.
So either you play your VST with one preselected patch, or you change a patch with no playing.
That's pointless.

Anyway, as much as I love Live, I think MIDI implementation should have been made much much better.
I have never had these problems before I started using Live with hardware controller and VST, but now I spot many bugs.

So am I missing something here or....?

MIDI implementation needs a facelift

Post by mariposa » Thu Jan 11, 2007 1:04 pm

You're right. Live's MIDI implementation needs a facelift. I (miss)use MIDI for mixerautomation for theaterproductions. But when you import a MIDI-file into Live all used controllers are set to zero at the beginning of the file until a different value comes up(see the red line in the midiclip view). This means that my mixerfaders turns to zero! I found a way to work around it but that needs a lot of work and is not reliable. In let's say Cubase the same MIDI-clips work perfectly.
Second, you can't even do a sysex dump!!! Why not??

Hope somebody can help.

I second both of you. The only thing I like of Live for MIDI stuff is the interface but as for MIDI functionality, no thanks. I actually sketch the basic material in Live and then move to Pro Tools for CC and SysEx (amazing, even PT can do SysEx and Live can't?). And with the numerous bugs I have read about I am still in version 5 comfort zone.

I concur. The manual has the word "program change" in it about 3 times, and once in the index.

I've recorded all my outboard gear automation (patch changes for vocal & guitar), tried to bring them into Live, and live doesn't even recognize they exist. A patch change is one of the most critical things for automating outboard gear......in a LIVE setting.....bizarre.

THe guitar fx have to change several times inside of one song and it looks like not only can live NOT read the patch changes in an imported midi file, Live can't even do that within its own interface.....just one PC sent at the beginning of each clip, maybe you can get it to send mid-clip, but not more than once from what I've researched.

Anyway I'll shut up and post my own thread on this.

If you dont already know the only way to make programs changes is to take a midi clip and there you can put even bank changes. For me the problem still remains: midi crash with wah pedals.
