sound problem - help

I know this isn't Live related but i'm tearing my hair out here! I have no sound for internet site's i.e youtube,myspace etc. And also cool edit - BUT i do have sound through media player, Live, battery & kontakt. BUT not the latter 2 when used as stand alone. I think its some kind of codec problem, but which one?
