If the AMD is an "AMD 64 X2 Turion" then I would definitely go for it. "Core Duo" is only 32 bit, so you do not have the option to upgrade to Vista.
AMD Turion or Intel Core Duo
From what ive heard, the intel chips are more powerful and quieter, but by a minute margin.I have the amd64x2 and it runs like a dream, it isnt even loud, guess it depends on your cooling system.
Doing a direct comparison with my girlfriends intel centrino duo however, i can hear the noise difference, albeit slightly and hers does seem to run faster than mine, but that may be due to all the shit clogging up my computer!
Theres not much in it but if the core duo is only 32bit then id go for and amd definetly cos vista will rock!

I have no pets but enjoy drawing pictures of insects and sending them to people
CPUs don't make noise, its the Heat sync fan. (HSF)laurence wrote:From what ive heard, the intel chips are more powerful and quieter, but by a minute margin.I have the amd64x2 and it runs like a dream, it isnt even loud, guess it depends on your cooling system.

I have a volcano 12 in my AMD 3000+ rig atm with a custom fan it can go up to 5900rpm and is 90mm so it CAN get loud... I just leave it @ 2300rpms.
If you want a quieter HSF, get 120mm one. They push more CFMs at the same or lower RPMs. All my cases have 1x120mm intake, 1x120mm outtake, 1x90mm HSF, 1x90mm PSF. (Next rig will have all 120mm fans.)

Possibly the most ridiculous thing I've ever read.
Until Core Duo AMD chips ran far far cooler and used less power than Intel chips. Both AMD and Intel chips will use throttling in overheating situations, although the AMD chip doesn't need to do it so often.

I have been an AMD fan for years. But even I will tell you that EVERY test out there shows the Core 2 Duo to be a superior chip. It will scale up better, the performance is already better, it overclocks better, and it runs cooler. AMD doesn't even have a rival solution (65nm) until this summer. Intel has clearly leapfrogged with the Core 2 Duo. Please check www.tomshardware.com to see that I'm not an Intel fanboy. If anything, I hate myself for making this post. But The Core 2 Duos are faster, cooler, cheaper, and therefore, the only logical choice.
Same here mang, I'm an avid AMD user and my next rig will be an intel core 2 duo.nebulae wrote:I have been an AMD fan for years. ditto. For now, C2D.
BUT- It is going to be interesting to see what AMD does since they just aquired ATI. I wouldn't wait it out though... just something interesting to think about in the future...
The ability to use the CPU and GPU in an audio program?
Isn't the $$$ Pro Tools cards made of little GPU processors?

I as well. Though, I won't be buying a new computer until Feb 2008, so who knows what AMD will come up with by then?kaffein wrote:Same here mang, I'm an avid AMD user and my next rig will be an intel core 2 duo.nebulae wrote:I have been an AMD fan for years. AMD doesn't have a real response to Core2Duo till this summer. I promise you that AMD won't be back on top until at least later this year. You gotto understand that along with being super efficient, C2D can also scale up in raw speed. No AMD chip has broken the true 3ghz barrier yet, and so they are suddenly really behind. If Feb is your target date, your best bet is a C2D.
Please, I urge you guys to read up on the processors at www.tomshardware.com. They do extensive tests and no matter how you slice it, C2D is the chip to get for the foreseeable future.

and this is why you cannot of CPU brand loyalty, it's just silly.
AMD- used to suck in the past, then became the fastest processor for Pro Tools LE and Live, now lagging behind.
IBM- used to be fast, running in the best computers for the digital artisan using an apple pc, then became dated and overpriced, fell behind apple's need to boost speed, couldn't put a G5 in a notebook without a fire.
Intel- back and forth, sometimes the fastest, sometimes overheating and not keeping up. Currently the fastest on the typical consumer market.

does somebody want to answer my original question? the option i have are these for this use anyboy want to chime in?
'what about the lower end intel T2050 1.6 chipsets? im looking at a new laptop and these are in the price range along with the AMD Turion 64 2.0. i only need the laptop for djing so plenty of fx and only 8 channels of audio. the the intel still be the best option?'
i lot of the newer stuff does not have a cardbus. hence looking at these older models. and i dont want to break the bank on a laptop for djing i use the desktop for production.

toshiba satellite, Core2Duo T7200, 2GB RAM, 200GB HD, <1400€
my Athlon64 3500+ has been giving me warning signs for a while and seems to be more and more chocking.
