I agree that they need a new chip manufacturer a long time ago.

Dell has these working today in their labs. It will take until 2007 to work out every last kink. Apple insists in their license agreement that 3rd parties' machines must run OSX as flawlessly as it does on Apple hardware. Apple is fanatical that their OS give users the experience to which we are all accustomed.

Dell is promising exactly one year until the fist versions are available for retail sale. That puts availability on April 1st, 2007.

All of these articles only talk about Dell. There's no information stating Apple is interested in licensing this technology; just that Dell wants to license it from them. I thought this quote (from the mac360 article) put it quite well:

"Dell is struggling, missing revenue and profit targets, and has a slipping market share. Why should Apple help out?"

With apple's rising market share (12% of laptops now), it's easy to see this. I wouldn't mind seeing a version of OSX on non-apple hardware, but I'm a big fan of platform control. Part of the reason why OSX is (generally) more stable than windows is that the hardware configuration is more predictable. The OS can provide better drivers for devices that have been specially picked for it, rather than relying on 3rd-party drivers or OEM stuff.

Apple has learned a lot from Sun's failure, I think. You might recall that Sun had a similar business strategy to Apple at one point in time... use high-powered, expensive hardware to sell the software. However, Apple and Sun went different ways with the 64 bit platform. Sun adopted 64 bit chips very early on, and as a result, they were extremely expensive at the time (but oh, were they fast :) ). Faced with competition from linux and cheap x86 boxes, Sun choose to stay the course... for awhile. When the wheels started to fall off, they tried selling linux on x86 hardware, then releasing solaris for x86, and eventually open-sourcing the whole damn thing (including java) and finally switching over to intel themselves. Their whole business now is a mess, and if they didn't have so many high-powered customers with legacy hardware, they would have been out of business years ago. Now they've reached a stasis -- neither expanding nor collapsing.

Anyways, sorry to ramble so much, but the point of the story is, cheaper isn't always better. If you're in the high-end market it's important to stay high end, and instead find other ways to distinguish your products from cheaper competition. This is why I don't think Apple is interested in talking to Dell... but I did find your links to be some interesting reading. ;)

Oh man, ditto. I'll buy you a beer sometime and we'll swap Dell horror stories. :)

If you can't make music because you're on a Mac and think you need a PC or vice versa, unplug your computer, put it back in the box and return it, you're too stupid and talentless to be in the game in the first place.

Use what makes you happy, it's ridiculous to think one machine is the answer for everyone.

Macs suck big infected donkey dick. :P

Can you run a Mac version of Live with PC and Mac VSTs at the same time, and all the combinations thereof, hitherto, forthwith for a fortnight?
