Abl 'sucking up' soundcard

Post by jjh » Sat Jan 20, 2007 11:00 am

Hi,
How can I put this? well:
When using ableton, other applications seem to be 'locked out' of my soundcard, which is this one: http://www.behringer.com/FCA202/index.cfm?lang=ENG
this is inconvenient of course, because it's not possible, for instance, using ableton and some other audio app (or even firefox) at the same time; i have to quit ableton, do my thing in the other app, restart, etc
i've looked for some internal routing function in ableton and in the asio drivers of the behringer.. but until now..

anyone have a clue?

using winXP by the way

regards,

JJH

That is perfectly normal behavior, I'm afraid. It would be worth your time to read a few of the sites on optimizing your computer for audio work. Black viper, Tarekith

What you would need is a soundcard with at least 4 outs. (2 pairs stereo)

Then you would enable only one set in ableton, and have the other set chosen as the default for playback in the Windows sound mapper settings.

ah.. I see

so I should buy another soundcard
then mix the signal down afterwards.. that's correct?

just interested: would a mac behave in the same way with this card?
or is osx better equipped is this kind of matter?

thanks for the sites btw, looks interesting
