FAO: DM2 users

Post by eturnol » Thu May 20, 2004 4:55 pm

hi

based on the many praises of the dm2 as a midi controller i read on this forum, coupled with its ridiculously low price, i went to ebay and got one!

i just cant get the darn thing to work with ableton live (3.04) tho. i downloaded midi ox and dm2 to midi, as the instructions told me to do, but now i'm stuck. the dm2 doesnt come up on the list of midi inputs in live, so i'm wondering how i can get it to start communicating with ableton.

i'm sure that its possible to use it in live, so i'm gonna just ask my second question right now too. can someone please give me one little example of how to program the darn thing? how do i program one of the 16 buttons on the "turntables" to start and stop a specified audio file?

thanks so much dm2 users!

so you have Live, midi ox,and DM2 properly installed. Open Live, then midi ox, then DM2. Within the awesome DM2 software, you can choose a midi out port (no need for an in port!), so choose one of the 8 midi yoke out ports. Given that they show up and you successfully select one, you should now be able to go into Live, select that midi yoke port as a midi in port, and you should be on the way. hit some DM2 buttons to see if the midi input indicator in Live blinks. If so, you're bascially there. Now, in the DM2 software, you can click on buttons , the scratch rings, or the crossfader and see what midi signals they are sending by default. Then you can decide what you want to do. This free software is so dope--you can assign one button of the DM2 to as many software parameters as you like--I have a "reset" button on the DM2 I programmed to turn 40+ send knobs back to zero. I find the DM2 software to be very intuitive and fully kick ass, I wish Live were able to allow this type of mapping of one hardware control to many software controls.

thanks for the reply!

i have one problem tho. the 8 midi yoke ports do not show up in the choices for MIDI outputs. all i get for midi is my usual audiophile (delta AP) and a microsoft wavetable SW. do i have to select something in midi ox for it to show up in the dm2 to midi software??

thanks for all your help so far!

hmmm--should show up. Do the midi yoke inx/outs show up in Live??? If not, then ox/yoke must not be properly (or fully) installed--I can't remember exactly, but I know it was a bit of a funkee install, I had to closely follow the ox websites install procedure.

yoke/ox installs as "hardware" if I remember well ... you have to follow install instructions very carefully or it won't work

I had the same problem, but I fixed it.

Sounds like your having the same problem that I had. It involved me going into the registry and deleting some stuff. Personally, I'm not real comfortable hacking around in there but I was desperate and I took the chance and it worked. Now all 8 midi yoke show up as Midi inputs in Ableton. You also have to have the "dm2 to midi" app open for it to work with Ableton. Here's the ridiculously long string of posts regarding this issue....FYI skip to the end for the instructions to fix the prob. Hope this helps

wow thanks for all the help guys!

i actually figured the whole installation thing out last night. i had to remove the programs then reinstall them, following the intrustions, and it worked! midi yoke 1-8 shows up on all my aplications now.

the only problem i have with the dm2 now is the latency. it takes about a second for an input to kick in, then about 2 more for the note off to appear. so right now my dm2 isnt very usable. :-(

i looked at the midi ox website and it said i had to change something in the registry to remove the latency. i did, but i dont think it worked very well. did anyone else have this problem?

thanks again!
