What MIDI controller DO work with Live?

Post by Current » Mon Jan 22, 2007 11:20 am

After spending about two weeks trying to set up my UC33 as Control Surface, I give up. Even tried the User Defined Scripts and can´t get it to work.

So what MIDI controller do work?

It´s simple, I want to control Live without having to go through a lot of frustration. I want to plug and play 8) which means if I need to pay for it, I will.

Thanks.

Thats standard when buying something from the US. Anything that contains lead has that notice AFAIK.

Thanks god, at least I know that it contains lead. I am so relived.

So to take this a bit further; does Mackie Control work? Does M-audio Projectmix work???? Anyone?

using a mackie control and when it works, it's great. However, i've always had some niggles with it which have ranged from minor irritations to me wanting to throw it out of the window. posted on these forums about them but they weren't replied to so I assume either very few people use the MCU or they're bizzare problems specific to me

Every now and then when I boot up and load up live, my midi configuration has disapeared and I have to reboot before it reconises the mackie. Tried swapping cables to see if that was the issue but no difference.

Often I can move a fader and there's an obvious latency before the volume actually changes, or even more annoyingly the fader will just slide right back to where it came from. Again, I get the feeling that this is more to do with my midi set up (connected by m--audio uno via usb) rather than a fault with the mcu, purely on the basis that I can't imagine it can really be that lame considering some of the reviews i've read and what i've read abot how widely it's used with other software.

To add insult to injury, last weekend one of the faders has died. This seems to be a mechanical problem

On the bright side, you get full transport control, 24 pre defined control buttons which deal with most of the basic live functionality, and 16 user defined controls all of which are easily mapped / remapped. It's easy to control solo, mute, track select and record. The V-pots are great for controling software instruments and plugins. the layout is very intuitive and the unit feels very sturdy - except for the dead fader which just feels limp

In an ideal world I should be raving about it, but to be honest I wish i'd spent half the cash I spent on the mackie on something like the behringer bcf200 or evolution x session (or both!) and spent the rest on a new synth

Anyone else using the MCU having similar problems or is it just me ?

Thanks for the feedback.

I guess I will just try and get used to setting up the UC33 as a regular MIDI controller, not as a Control Surface, this way I can get most of the functions to work, however, if I´m not careful and let the VST´s and synths receive message from All inputs, something weird happens because of the UC.

For instance, the IpmOscar plays back notes wrong..(?), if I hit a C, it can play back a G or whatever.

I wish Ableton could just put up a list of what controller controls what from Control Surface point of view, I guess it would be easy to program the controller myself.

I have my uc33e setup using the CCs from the BCR2000 control script in Ableton, with a tweak or two, and it works fantastically???

But I set it up months ago, and can't remember exactly how I did it because I haven't had to muck with it since.

Muy bien, I have to try that out. I was wondering, is it possible to dump setups from the UC33 to Enigma? Anyway, thanks a lot anti-banausic.

All the best.

Please take some time to check out Novation's Remote SL (www.novationmusic.com). They have this automapping-technology that works so, that for example you select any plugin and it shows the parameters on the controller's displays and you can adjust them from the corresponding knobs. And it also has sliders and playback controls that map automatically and you can adjust your mixer directly from the sliders and see the levels instantly.

anti-banausic, what preset are you using from the UC33? Can you actually control the transport and channel strips by setting it up as a Control Surface? I have gone through all the presets but no luck.

I have tried Novations Remote, it´s great for controlling VSTs and stuff but I wanted a "mixing console".

So, what I think I did was found out what MIDI CCs the first preset on the BCR2000 uses in automap. Then I used the enigma software to program these MIDI CCs to the UC33e wherever I felt it appropriate, like sliders for volume, and first row of knobs for automap. I think you can look in the script for the BCR2000 and it may have the MIDI ccs that you need.

I also believe that I used the number banks to access further banks in automap, you realize that if the plugin has more than 8 parameters, then you can access different "Banks" under automap that will have other parameters.

I don't recall ever getting the sends or transport to work, but I think I may have another go with that.

I will report back if I get a better user script going with the UC33e.

Also, if you are going to go this route, you have to remember to use the BCR2000 remote script in LIVE, not the UC33e. It is the MIDI ccs that are important, not the actual hardware.

Further, AFAIK, the remote scripts are programmed to work only with the first factory defined bank of all the different remote surfaces. That is a very important thing to not forget.

Best,

Mackie Control Issues - Midi Volume

Post by composerguy78 » Thu Mar 22, 2007 5:44 am

HI Guys,

So I do have a mackie control. I do recommend it, but I got mine for $600 off of craigslist and I've been fortunate so far in that it's working fine.

The thing is, and please give me your advice any mackie control owners reading this, I can't seem to get the faders to send midi volume control. Surely this should be an automatic feature? ':x' Neither does it display tracknames. I can select tracks easily to play (which is awesome) though.

Whilst I'm at it, does anyone know how to get a fader for external midi synths? sure, using a virtual instrument or an audio track but external hardware?

please help!

Thanks

Felix
