When djing on ableton....

Is it better to render each part of the track into a different wav. sample vs creating the clips on the arrangement window and just using the complete track as the only sample from which every clip feeds from??

For Djing you sould work in the session and not in the arrangment.Make copies of your track and then make loops on this track like intro break..........And trigger them how you like.Lets say you have 3 copies or better 3 clips from the same track make one loop on the first clip like intro and do the same on the other clips but diferent loops.I hope it helps if i understend your question.My English is bad..

I think I disagree with DJ Vakis, but I think [s]he has misunderstood why you're using the arrangement view. (I assume you're only using the arrangement view to prepare your clips, then performing from the session view.)

I make each clip reference the same audio file. Then if my clips overlap, I'm not increasing hard drive space usage, and the same audio content only has to be loaded once (minimising RAM usage). Also I can decide to lengthen a clip on the fly, if you like.

And if I just want to play the full track while I nip off to the loo, it's easy to do so without needing another copy of it (or having to worry about follow actions).

yeah thats exactly what i've been using it for. I've been basically rendering sections of the song (15-20 sections) so i could repeat and loop as i wanted. At times i've had to make new clips of this 64 beat sections in the arrangement window before using them in the session window and i noticed that this clips feed off of the same 64 beat wav. sample. Thats when i realized that i could simply have the complete wav track and create clips in the arrangement window that would feed off of that long track. I just wish a pro. dj would explain a few things to me cause information like this cannot be found in the manual or any other source of info i've read. Live is truly an amazing tool.

Personally I would just set up multiple clips referencing one audio file, but this is truly a persoanl preference. Either way works.

Do you think both ways have the same impact on the cpu? I still havent performed live using ableton and my biggest concern on changing platforms is the thought of my computer crashing in the middle of a set. For that reason im getting the Macbook pro 2.33 ghz with 3 gygs of ram, but i want to keep it as simple for the cpu as possible.

It shouldn't make a difference to the CPU, the bottleneck you're going to hit is disk access, which would probably be optimised by having fewer larger loops rather than many small ones, it's much of a muchness though if you have a decent amount of RAM.

With a new MacBook Pro, this isn't even worth worrying about IMO. I have the same laptop, and my most extensive DJ sets only hit 7-8% on the CPU meter.
