Clicks and pops

Post by Dan Dare » Tue Feb 06, 2007 5:31 am

I have been plagued by these clicks and pops. My CPU usage will bit at say 8 percent and they will kick in even on 128 buffer.

I have external firewire drive and heaps of ram..

I am using MBOX 2 I think core audio is the culprit.

I found out that I dont have the clicks/pops using the internal audio... only with my firewire interface. What about you?

Yes, only my interface is Mbox 2 which is USB. But the pops stop using internal audio every time.

Hi,

Did you make sure you are using the latest Core Audio driver for the Mbox? Also, try swapping to another USB port on your computer, it could help, and try increasing the latency a bit.

Thanks for your response.

I have the very latest drivers for the Mbox 2 and my buffer is set to 2048 what overall latency do you suggest?

Cheers

Hi,

Overall latency (or driver error compensation in Live 6) has nothing to do witht he real latency, it is only used by Live to re-align audio recordings that you do without monitoring the audio through Live, in case your driver does not reprot the right latency, there is a lesson included in Live concerning that.

Are you using Live 5 or 6? 2048 is quite very high, it should work with 256 or 512 at least.

Did you check with Digidesign if there is a compatibility issue with your computer and the Mbox Core Audio drivers?

I am using Live 6.

Yes I have been talking with Digidesign as well. My computer is a fully qualified MacBook Pro 2 Ghz Core Duo with 2 Gb of Ram.

The driver should be fine. I have been through all the upgrades and I am on the very latest compatible versions.

I have even tried another MBox 2 to see if it was that and the same thing happened.

Thanks again for the support.

And I'm having the same problems with my Firebox interface. I dont think the problem is in the audio interface, I think it's live 6 having troubles with external interfaces. With Live 5 everything works perfectly, with the same liveset and settings.

I think your buffer is set way to high. The higher the buffer is set the more heat it dissipate. The hotter it gets the more problem you get. I say 512 or 256 is suitable. It does more then just sync programs and recording devices... I'm not sure how it works on a mac, but can you disable various components? Like say a built in soundcard, or multi media drives. Something or anything? Are you using an external soundcard? Maybe it's complicating things with two sound cards going. I can't say for sure.

With your shutdown of ableton and plugins. A way that I found help is to eliminate your vst's. Try moving them to another folder. Like i.e. Start with one plug in and move it into your main vst folder. Scan it for the new plugin. load it, If ableton runs continue moving each vst back into the vst folder until you find the vst that doesn't work or is not compatible with live 6. Sometimes you will know that it's a specific vst causing the problem when you open that one and ableton shuts down. Try eliminating the one that causes the problem, and then report that one. Maybe it's not compatible with live 6. Or try reinstalling it. Hope this helps.

clicks

Post by ferrarimusic » Thu Feb 08, 2007 8:37 am

I played the music from the internal disk. For 1 or 2 days it seemed ok. Now it starts to click from the internal disk, too. same problems: it clicks every other bar, always on the "1", no matter what tempo. the cursor jumps to the beginning of the loop or to a previous bar.

so, I think it's not a problem of the external firewire disks...

do you guys have your files compressed to save space? It could be that your sound files whether AIF or WAV are compressed. Along with als files. Try uncompressing all files pertaining to Ableton or any software you use to make music.

I have it both with playing live (monitoring), and recording and playback.
