Anyone using Live 6 and an EMU 1820M?

Post by mission » Fri Jan 19, 2007 4:37 pm

Question... TIA:

Here's my setup...

MPC 1000
Mackie Desk
EMU 1820m
Live 6.0.1
Latest Patchmix DSP Build

So I go main outs on the MPC1000 to the desk (drums)
Master Out on DAW is routing through 1/2 Outs on the Card... Seperate Strips on the Desk (leads/fx)
Midi 11 in Live is my sub with mono utility and on a seperate out trying to go into a mono strip on my desk.

unfortunately the other stuff from the main out bleeds over into the mono channel, creating a subtle phasing (obviously it even being there in the first place is not what i want either)...

how fucking hard can this be? all i want is to use multi outs on my interface to go to a desk and then record back into the mpc (which is working just fine) to bypass another ADC. isnt that production? the patchmix dsp on the emu1820m really gets my shit in a bunch. i love how it sounds but damn.

any advice from 1820 users? this is killing me... i should be able to mix my sub on a different track.

basically, the main output of the daw is bleeding onto this sub channel even tho i can get the sub to only go to this... i dont understand it.

I'm cross mixing using the 1820m's DSP

It's not that hard once you wrap your head around the convoluted way that PatchMIX virtualized the "bus". I don't have time to explain (gotta run out the door), but I'm putting this here to remind myself to explain it when I get back.

I'm having a separate problem with memory leaks in the 1820m's ASIO drivers.

What I do:

I have several virtual busses running to handle ins/outs to hardboard compressor and a telephone interface. There is a real danger of the telephone interface creating the same phasing problem you are talking about. This is caused by a loop-back being created within the DSP chip.

How to solve it:

I create several ASIO strips in PatchMix. Strips are:

Physical Inputs: 1in (mono), 2/in (mono), 3/4 in (stereo) from compressor, 4/5in (stereo) from telephone interface.
Physical Outputs: Main goes to 1/2 out. 3/4 to compressor, and 4/5 to telephone coupler, oh and SDIF out to monitors.

ASIO Strip: I add ASIO 31/32 as a strip.

At this point you should have seven strips plus the main. They are 1in, 2in, 3/4in, 4/5in, 3/4out, and 4/5out. I could have put 3/4out as a master send on the main bus, but I wanted more control over it using a virtual slider instead of a virtual knob.

Ok, now for the virtual patching. To prevent a loop-back, I send the compressor physical in to ASIO bus 8/9 with no return. I also send the telephone physical in to ASIO 10/11 with no return. This prevents me from having the inputs being sent to the mains and creating a loopback.

Now setup Live: You have to create separate inputs and outputs for each thing you want to hear or not want to hear. I send Live outputs to ASIO 31/32 instead of straight to Main 1/2. This allows me to control the volume on the bus as a pre-fade listen independent of the main bus.

I also check my routing for each track in Live to make sure 1) I am getting my sound from only the correct source, and 2) that it is output only to where I want it to go, in this case Mixer.

I know this sounds complicated but it really isn't. I have a Session setting saved for the 1820m if you want me to send it to you. I can also walk you through my setup via desktop sharing if you need it. Just let me know.

Cheers,

ghost.

bro you are a fucking saint.

yes, that all sounded confusing and i do a lot of work around hacks and pray that my main session (that i saved, somehow works) doesnt get corrupted.

i still cant just start with a blank session and build it to suit my exact needs... like i cant even get a mic to properly record without having output in the same channel. how am i supposed to make the next 50 cent?!?!

do you have instant messenger or anything man?

im antpmg on aim
