Noob question: Midi import

Hi all,

I am playing with Live Lite 6 (have already bought the full version but I am waiting to get a more powerful computer to install it!) and have a very silly question: I am pretty sure the answer is very simple so forgive my newbieness.

I have a midi file of a song I would like to play with in Live: if I drag the file to Garageband, a number of tracks would appear with the several software instruments used, each having its own midi information.
If I drag the same file to Live (or select it from the browser) only one midi track is created, containing a single path of midi information for all of the different instruments.

Is there a way to have Live recognize that the one midi file actually contains information for more than a midi track?
I assume so, since it automatically happens in Garageband!
Can anyone help?

Have you tried clicking on the file in the browser? I don't know your file format, but to me, midi files usually look like small folders in the browser and clicking on it opens it up an shows all individual tracks.

thanks for the suggestion but the midi I am dealing with looks like a single file and not like a small folder (I know what you are talking about as I have seen it with some other files) so I can do nothing but drag it as a single item into session view.

Any other suggestions? It's driving me pretty crazy...

I have some midi files of the type that you are talking about. Each file contains several different midi loops (they are midi GM drum loops). When I drag this file into the top clip of a midi track in session view, the first of the loops is put on the clip and then additional midi tracks are automatically created by Live, each track having one of the midi loops in the top clip. Have you tried doing it in session view like that ?

shiba_dad I don't remember if I've tried that: I will do that as I get back home tonight.
I am sure I've tried dragging within a single clip and on top of the session view to create a new midi track but that didn't work.
I will try dragging on top of an existing midi track and see how it goes.
