With opensource freeware like Lame encoder already out there, it should be a very easy implementation for Live to spit out MP3s. By not having this function, I think Live really dates itself compared to other DAWs.

isn't it the case that a company has to pay the mp3 association if they add mp3 encoding to their apps? I think there's a license fee involved, that's why there's so many free ones out there and so few pro apps have it.....

I would like to be able to render as MP3 just for convenience, valid points made above on both sides. But if you don't wanna use it you don't have to... if it isn't there then you can't...

I haven't seen that many Pro-Apps with MP3 encoding built in... Which ones do?

I also use Pro Tools LE, and even though there is an MP3 option when installing (not only for rendering but for importing as well), it is an optional extra that you have to pay for. I bought DV Toolkit 2, which did unlocked it. (I would have been pretty shitted if it didn't, considering it's price).

From the digidesign website...

"The MP3 Option software is a paid option, and is only available online at the DigiStore:
http://store.digidesign.com

The software costs $19.95 (USD) to cover the codec licensing fee that Digidesign pays to the Fraunhofer Institute for each MP3 Option sold. It is not included with every copy of Pro Tools, because that would raise the cost of every new system and upgrade by @ $20 per person, and not everyone needs this option. So it is a paid option for those that want and need it."

Either way its pretty good that Ableton works so well with importing MP3's and other audio files off the shelf... I consider not being able to render MP3's a small issue in comparison to other features that could be introduced.

iTunes has a pretty decent in-built audio encoder/converter - just use that!

I wouldn't mind the option, because I don't have any other music playing / encoding software on my music computer, so for now I transfer it over the network and encode on a different computer. I don't really want to install any other programs on the music comp..

But it's no biggie either way

I dont think an mp3 encoder is that big of a necesity for live. Surely there are more important tasks at hand for the abes to take care of

Like its been said, lots of great free mp3 encoders abound. I use Audacity. Free, simple, doesnt take up a lot of space, and it does the job nicely.

you can record it (realtime) into a separate track (set the input to "resample")

save your set.

go to the folder where the recording was saved (with your OS browser, not the live browser)

copy the wav or aiff file to itunes.

Encode

Enjoy

Should work :?:

It's not so much that it is a big thing missing (i.e. many free converters), I have soundforge and do my mix finalizing using that anyway and it has mp3 encoding, so I don't especially miss it in Live...

the only point being in that it would be a simple thing to implement in Live and that proper daws such as Cubase SX/Cubase 4/Samplitude/Logic etc include it (although you have to pay a 10 dollar user fee if you get the cut down Cubase SL/Cubase studio 4) and when something like FL includes it it becomes a niggly (well if even FL has it, why can't we).

So I think it should be added, so long as it doesn't lead to the price being bumped up more than 10 dollars . Ableton seems to want to be regarded as a major 'playa' in the DAW world and omitting .mp3 export does seem cheap on their behalf and something that should be cheap to fix for the consumer...
