Saffire on Intel Mac, Help Me Not Smash This P.O.S.

Post by tjwett » Fri Feb 16, 2007 1:33 am

ok so i got my new Saffire. SAME EXACT PROBLEM. latest version of OS X, latest drivers and firmware, latest versions of Live 5, Live 6, GarageBand, Soundtrack Pro. in every application i can use it for about 5 minutes and then it shits out digital noise for about 60 seconds and then goes back to normal for another 5 minutes. i am on an Intel Mac mini with 2GB of RAM. and i'm confident it's not my machine since i've had the logic board swapped out before getting this new Saffire. this is horseshit, ANYONE on an Intel Mac using the Saffire without problems? tell me your secret!

The focusrite stuff is a problem period. I only use their TDM plugs which (on a intel mac) have problems as well. Their Liquid Mix is full of delay problems so it seems like their other products would be the same.

I'm using live (when in standalone mode) with either a DIGI 002, DIGI 192 or a M-Audio 1814 and they all work perfectly....hope that helps somehow.

I've never had a more frustrating experience with a piece of hardware. I took 3 defective units back, had my hard drive trashed on both a PC AND a Mac....

No problems with a FW410, Lexicon Omega, or Presonus Firepod

ugh. i was about to purchase the saffire a few months ago but finally went for the mackie satellite.

Heard and read a bunch of horror stories regarding the saffire so i guess steering away from it it was a good idea after all.

Sorry you're having troubles with it. Maybe this time return it and get something else, if possible (?)

The mackie satellite is around the same price range of the saffire, and it works great with my MBP. HAd it for a few months now and havent had any issues with it :)

I use Saffire Focurite SE and I have to say it gives me nil problems except:

It doesn't seem to like me running an additional monitor and thats when the noise starts. Then I have to shut down and detahc everything and re-connect and re-boor and the noise goes away.

Strangely it really only seems to happen when I have some plug in showing on the second monitor thats quite cpu intensive and graphic heafvy, like Guitar Rig 2.

Now to be honest I'm not sure if there is an issue with GR2 and it somehow affecting Live which then shows itself as the noise thourhg the saffire OR it could be something to do with the mini DV out interfering with the firewire...

I've suspected that for some time, because if I unplug the second monitor and reboot. hey presto, problem disappears.

This would however point the finger squarely at the mac and not the saffire itself...

I dunno, But like all things computer related...there is at least a work round.

I also run saffire LE on intel mac and no problems until yesterday. I'd left compute on unused for a while when i returned there was a crackling noise when recording, i checked cables, mixer etc no problems, so re-booted computer and noise dissapeared. Not great, but in general iv'e been very happy with the saffire.

The saffire really was the worst piece of hardware I ever bought...
