*note to self : beware...covert operators will kill for copious amounts of breakfast foods*

You'd be in a shark frenzy in Vegas.

Berlin Schmerlin.....

Berlin is played out, Techno is on it's way out there just like everywhere else. I would rather live on the beach in California in the sun any day, if I was going to move.

Berlin is just a bunch of pretentious art-fag poser wankers like you find in Williamsburg or any other "hip" spot on the planet. Nobody is cool, everyone fronts like they are the shit, everyone acts like they've seen it all, "been there, done that", blah blah blah......good luck making friends or connections....it's like high school all over again, get ready for mad drama, too.....

pffft

Yeah, but don't they keep the food near the strippers?
Brie and baby-oil don't go well together.

The best food is kept IN the strippers:

You're absolutely right...California is nothing like high school at all.

I like soup!!!

So do any of the European Abletoners know roughly what a new computer will cost in Euros? One with, I dunno, say the following specs:

Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E6300 (1.86GHz, 1066 FSB)
FREE Upgrade to Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium w/1GB memory
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz- 2DIMMs
250GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™
16x DVD+/-RW Drive
17 inch E177FP Analog Flat Panel
256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE TurboCache
Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio

A rough estimate would really help! I cannot seem to find that info online, or maybe I am not looking in the right places.

PS: MAC users need not reply

yes it is just as bad, that is my point. People are people no matter where you go, and Berlin is no exception.....a city full of flawed fucked-up human beings. At least in Cali you have the beach and good weather. But....

you'll see........all I am trying to say that Berlin is no utopia. The hype makes people think that it is the heavenly planets where everything is just love and music and dancing and cool clubs and no economy, just trade in music, everyone will love you because you are in to Techno......etc etc etc...they'll be your friend, they'll put you up, feed you, give you money and sex...just be prepared for REALITY, not a fantasy that your mind creates in an attempt to escape the human condition, that's all. There is no escape from the human condition.
There most definitely is more music in general happening in clubs in Berlin compared to the states, especially Berlin, and a lot of it is good music, but the people are still generally annoying as hell just like anywhere else and after awhile you could give a fuck less about going out to clubs.

After years of people making techno "pilgrimages" to Berlin, a lot of people there have a cynical, jaded attitude towards artists and DJ's the like coming there to find their destiny or whatever. Be prepared to be just another lost soulseeker in an ocean of lost soulseekers, many of whom find only disappointment and disillusionment, others who find what they are after, I suppose.

So whats the fucking point then, everybody stays where they are because everything is the same, everywhere?
blah blah blaaa, depressing stuff.

I moved to berlin from nyc almost 4 years ago. While I would agree that utopia does not exist, the city is really relaxing as a place to live. I have lived in LA and it is comforting that I can take the train or ride a bike anywhere here as opposed to needing a car for anything there.

There are no open arms of promoters and label people waiting for anyone to come on down, but there is a certain magic in the air with so many people all pushing towards a similar dream. The little guys can stand amongst the giants. However, be prepared to work your ass off to get anywhere unless you have a lot of resources behind you. Rent is cheap, but it aint free.

Thanks, DGA. That is exactly the sort of reply I wanted. I am originally from South Africa, and have spent the last 16 years basically getting up and moving around the world as I please. I've lived in the UK, Spain, and all over the US. So I am a gypsy of sorts, and pretty used to starting from the bottom and working my way up.

I expect Berlin to be a tough market, just as any new place is a tough market for a newcomer, but like actors moving to Los Angeles, I am simply going to a place I feel offers the most in the industry I am in. I expect to work hard and to struggle in the beginning....nothing of value comes easy!

For what it's worth, I own a record label, so I don't really need to sell my music to other labels, although it probably wouldn't hurt to branch out a bit.

Thanks for the feedback!!

:)
