Playing with MIDI in Ableton

1. Is this true that with MIDI key map Range defined you can only transpose audio clips (chromatic transposition) in Ableton, but no Midi?
2. Is there any way to transpose a midi clip in Ableton according to the key received from midi keyboard in real time, or maybe there is some compatible patern sequencer plugin in which you can define patern to be transposed according the midi note received from midi keyboard?

Welcome!

MIDI can be transposed with the MIDI Scale plug-in.

You can set up the transposition amount to be defined by which MIDI note you send from the keyboard. Check out the tutorial on Dummy Clips.

OK thanks, that's not that straight forward, as i would expect. Actually I think every arranger keyboard does midi transposition (even my yamaha qy hardware sequencer has a keyboard split and ability to transpose bass line according to scale, while playing melody). I wonder why none of software sequencers does this that way out of the box.

because they're largely modular. You *can* do all of this, you just have to do a bit of setting up - for instance, key splits are really really easy in Live - you can do it by arming two tracks to the same input, and splitting them (or overlapping them) with two pitch plugins dropped on the tracks.

To be honest, this is easier than setting up key zones on hardware, if you ask me, but ymmv...

"A favourite trick is to put a scale plugin on a midi track with a midi instrument after, record a chordal midi pattern and then assign the Scale plugin to the same scale that the chords reside in. Tried with my usb keyboard (on midi track recorded some rhythmic/melodic pattern, added scale plugin on that track and added the instrument after, then enabled midi key range - one octave) - No luck. Nothing is being transposed. I wonder how you get that working? Not a that easy for sure.

If I understand well your question, you can assign a keyrange to a MIDI clip, or even better to the track's launch button. Now, when you will hit a key on your MIDI keyboard, the clip playing on the track will transpose. And with Live 6 ability to map the same control to various destinations, you can map the same keyreange to all of your track's play buttons (these appear while in MIDI assign mode, just above the track's stop button).

last thing: if you set your clips to 'legato' in the clip details, they won't re-launch each time you press a key.
