slow meters with 3.0 WinXP

Post by ak » Sat Feb 14, 2004 12:38 am

Hi,

i worked quite very long with 2.03. now i tried 3.0 and now 3.02.
When i load my old song which i created in 2.03 and playback,
all meter are displayed in slowmotion. this looks not so good, i always think uaah it may crash or hang soon.
audio is fine and latency too, just gfx. my song is very long, has about 600mb of samples. with 2.03 it still work.
when i look at CPU usage on WinXP it shows 100% but live only 40% !!
WTF is this.
any idea ??

LAptop IBM T21, 850Mht P3-512Mb, Echo Indigo DJ or Hammerfall DSP.

thanks

hi ak,
i experience the same problem, although no slow meters.
i have a 1.6 gb live set. when i play a certain scene, the cpu meter in live says 27%. task manager 100%. page file usage is 405mb.
when i delete all other scenes except for that one and save it as a new live set and play this scene, live still says 26%, but the task manager only 51%. page file is 221mb.

live 3.01
win xp pro

hi andreas,
i happened to notice that when live 3 is minimized there´s no such cpu problem. so i tried different view options and found out that when the clips are not displayed (Strg+Alt+P) everything is fine. well, except you don´t see the clips anymore... maybe you can confirm this? i mailed to ableton. i hope they´ll find the cause.

Hi Ak,

It seems that several people experience the same problem...

When you face it, do you use the full-screen mode (F11 touch)?

same in fully screen moden, only if all clips disappear with CTRL + ALt + P (?) CPU usage goes down in the taskmanager,

same happens if i delete like 50-100 clips.
the more clips i delete the less is the CPU usage !!! but only in taskmanager !

can´t use 3.x in live situations ! only 2.0.3 rocking the clubs right now ;(

greetings

Ak,

I would like to know if it is the same problem than the one I have:

If you re-start the laptop and re-open the session as it was before, does it occurs again since the re-start of Live, or do you have to wait a certain amount of time before it happens again?

Did you notice that when you move the mouse, the display returns to be normal, and then when the mouse stops, it slows again? It seems a silly question, but this is what is happening to me!!!!

After the problem occured, do you experience some problem closing XP? Does it take the same time to close the OS as usually?

I'm very disapointed: no one (Toshiba, RME, Albeton) seems to be able to have any idea on the issue... I would better re-start to play guitare and find an acoustic blues band...

Anyway I will try with the 2.0.3 version.

Cheers

Matthieu

PS: where do you live?

Maybe I have not used Live long enough but I have not come across these problems before.

The problem was coming from the laptop

Post by matheo » Thu Jun 10, 2004 7:04 am

Hi everybody,

This post just to say that the problem I had with the slow meter finally does no seem to come from Live!

I think my problem comes from a bad temperature regulation in the laptop that involves, after a certain time, a slow down of the processor and so the slow down of all the applications.

I made the test using Windows Multimedia: the problem appeared after 1 hour.

Conclusion: Toshiba support sucks (when I called them the first time they did not want help me because the problem was occuring with a software they did not provide me...) and Live is still a very good software.

Toshiba support is allright, but its hard for them to know all of the factors involved. Like you just found out by testing on your own, its a heat problem that manifests itself in more than one app, most often when you are doing processor intensive tasks. Here's a bunch of reading for you from post of mine in the past--basically you need to take out your heatsink and remove the mat of fibers and dirt that is surely there. Your computer will run like new after you do it, here's all the info:

Hello Ryan,

When I was saying "Toshiba support sucks", it was not because they did not find the solution by phone. It was not my expectation of course. I already worked in a support center, so I understand the problem they can have to solve an issue by phone.
I was just expecting advices, things to check,etc..., which is, from my point of view the goal of a hot-line.
Nevertheless, the person I had on the phone told me that I would have no help because the issue was occuring with a software that was not provided by Toshiba. She did not even try to get me some advices to search the cause of the problem. From my point of view she did not do well her job.
But perhaps you are right, it would be better to say: "the person from Toshiba support I had on the phone was an idiot " :D

Anyway, thanks for your advices. In fact, as bought the computer only 1 month ago, so I reported it yesterday in the shop to let them see what happens...

hi matheo,

no i don´t have any of your problems. seems that you have found the problem now. my IBM Thinkpad can´t switch down the processor speed afaik but my 99% problem cause the whole machine to switch off after 10.-20 mins ! because of overheating.
i played in the hottest clubs with 2.0.x, no problem but 3.0.x seems to have a problem or in combination with windows.
