OS x. + jag + Sound Cards

Do any OS X users have live and reason running no problems, especially with soundcards. i noticed a lot of people having motu problems. Does anyone use OS X and Live with a soundcard relaibly? If so which one?

I currently have an iMic and has done pretty well especially since it was only $35. However i would like to switch to OS X when jag comes out but need to be able to use my audio apps with no problems (and will buy a new souncard if that is the only thing holding me back)

Any help on this would be great,

(Also rumor has it new PowerMacs to be released this week)

Well, so far I don't seem to be having problems. I hope I am not speaking too soon. I just got around to installing Reason 2.0 in OSX this afternoon and it recognized my MOTU 828 and my MOTU Fastlane. The Fastlane is particularly cool because it now runs native in OSX and did not require any software or configuring. Nice. I opened LIVE and then Reason and ran the Reason Demo and recorded some loops with LIVE, dropped in some pluggins (the MDA pluggins are free and available at www.osxaudio.com!) and the CPU load was much lower than the beta Reason 2.0 I had been using. I was running around 25% CPU and no dropouts except when I deleted and added MDA plugins. I don't use it for performing though, I use it for composing and recording so the dropouts did not really bother me. I was happy with it.
I'll do more testing with the native LIVE plugins tomorrow to see if I get dropouts.

have a good look at the tascam us428 and 228

I have been using the 428 for months and it runs beautifully, the drivers a llow me latency of 1ms in and 1ms out.

Faders and lots of other cool stuff there, midi ports if you need this stuff as a package then i would say check it out.

I have been usin Live US428 aswell but only as a MIDI controller since it has only one pair of stereo outputs witch is impossible for pre-listening tracks and samples. So i am using MOTU 828 as a audio interface witch is OK in OS 9 and has sound dropouts in OSX using Live.
If pre-listen funktion in not crucial for you , than i would go for US428 it is a great all around sound card +MIDI controller.

twelve my friend,

imic is great in osx, jag will only enhance it with prelistening. I don't care if it may be a bit dirty. So is live. In fact, it makes me feel devious (yeah, and frugal) using such a piece of shit soundcard.

Are you able to record in with the iMic? Someone told me they couldn't record in...

I spoke too soon. I get dropouts in OSX with the 828. It is especially bad with Reason 2.0 running in Rewire. If the CPU goes much above 30% the dropouts occur. This is only using 5 demo clips and 5 Ableton plugins with Reason running one sampler. So basically the MOTU drivers are not functional in OSX. They work great in OS9 though. I will wait for Jaguar to see if things improve for OSX. In the meantime, I have everything working under OS9.
I should check to see how things run using Sound Manager for OSX next. Just to be sure its MOTU's fault.

twelve, you can definitely record in with the imic in osx (I've never used os9). I haven't done it extensively, I import stuff on disc mostly, but I've recorded spoken word, synths, vocals with it. Just shove your xlr and 1/4" adapter into that 1/8" input (looks disturbing), and it really doesn't sound bad. My dream cheapo soundcard would be an imic built into an oxy 8. The Tascam machines seem real nice and happy though, and they, too, will prelisteningly blossom with jag.

Thanks all, i'll try a test this weekend with the iMic... maybe...

Does anyone know if you can use the ableton live if already registered on os 9 and use it for os x (same computer so i wouldn't think a problem...)

You'll have to go through the challenge/response process when you open Live under OS X (if you had to install it under 9), or vice versa.
