software for collaboration over the web

Post by HugeBear » Sat Mar 03, 2007 7:18 pm

does anyone use any special software or server for sharing projects with collaborating folks or for remixes?

i guess the logical choice is to run an ftp server, but i was wondering if anyone uses anything like cvs, or some web based resource management software to do something like this. i know 24 bit wave files can get pretty big, so i'm not sure how practical it could be for some genres with really long songs

edit:fixed a typo

You could look into ninjam, this allows you to jam in realtime over the net apparently

http://www.ninjam.com/

There's also a plugin that lets you run it in live itself

If what you really mean is just swapping files back and forth, (that are too big for emails) then http://www.yousendit.com or http://www.mediafire.com are good ways to go as they have I think a 100MB limit

I know a few maxMSP/Jitter developers that use cvs, but I think it's only really useful for VERY large and convoluted processes. Generally speaking the remix process isn't at all, it's usually basic files-back-and-forth.

I'd go for an ftp system with perhaps a rather rigid subfolder format, marking track-name and version numbering, perhaps?

Yeah, ftp is the easiest choise, i'm just thinking about alternatives that would do a little more, Groove and stuff like that is a pretty good idea i hadnt thought about.

i think some of those programs will do a comparison of directories and not re-upload stuff, if your re-uploading a 900 meg project folder it would help to not waste time and bandwidth with reduntant uploads.

I do have a server with bandwidth and a good bit of space, so i was thinking about how it would be nice just to have a certain folder on your hard drive of active projects that was automatically synced with other computers and among a few folks with different time-zones and schedules.

i know a local muso who has been using p2p software for exactly this
ie sending & receiving guidetrack mixes + overdubs etc
its a bit more friendly than ftp (eg realtime chat etc)
& no more complicated to setup access...

having a static IP makes this easier
maybe check out running a KDX server or similar?

the idea of trying to do it in realtime across the net
is slightly fraught with latency issues etc...
(altho obviously mr monolake has it sorted
just imagine if he/ableton incorporated that into LIVE v7!!!)
whereas easily exchanging overdubs etc would be a joy to behold!

yeah real time and stuff is unrealistic to me, what i want is more of a document management with some synchronization options

that NINJAM is great, I encourage anybody to use it. Certainly did not know such a thing exists.
This could probably be used to transmit any concert or session live to whoever wants to hear it.
It pays to crawl this forum.
thankxx again
