At Suvaca gigs, when there's some programming, my Live's the Master, click track to the drummer, everything midi-synched to it (MPC and other notebooks with keys and visuals)
When there's not, no click involved, so the band can loose a little.

ok, but the kool and the gang record sort of proves my point, a band with amazing groove - they were all able to play together obviously, and it IS possible to play along with the tracks and follow the "breathing" of the groove, at least for instrumentalists with some experience .. i think this is part of (or not the whole reason) why those old bands sound so good these days. and i hope this is not becoming a lost art!Coupe70 wrote:when playing in a band with loops and live musicians you will need a click. or at least the loop-player has to be tempo-boss.
you can try it for yourself: take a (unwarped) song by kool & the gang.
a groovy band, but heavily breathing !![]()
i suppose it is pretty standard these days, and understandable for live bands to stick a click in the drummers ear if loops and sequences are happening, but i hope quantization (or meta-quantization?) is only a temporary phase as we figure out how to get computers and people to work together better.. "circular logic" looks like its going in that direction.. cool.
just my 2 beats..
I think a click is defo needed. If you had a break in the music apart from the drummer, and then went to launch a synth or percussion loop, AND the drummer drifted by about 1bpm or whatever, it would sound awlful. No?
