The SM57 is generally used for mic-ing guitar cabinets and some drums. Not the best overall mic for vocals and sources requiring a broad range.
It may be the best vocal mic for under $100 though..

A friend @ work let me try out an AKG C2000b, and I found it to be very natural without capturing evry sound in the room ( a problem for most home recording arteestsss).

For £75 I bought a pair of Samson C02 Condenser mics, and I was expecting them to be crap, but to my ears they seem really good (and I have used them for many different purposes including vocals and stereo miking performances).

These are a handful of some of the worlds BEST microphones:

Neumann U47
Neumann M49
Neumann U67
AKG C12
Telefunken ELA M251

ALL excellent but all very expensive..ie.a few thousand each.

Also highly recommend the VST plugin, Vocal Magic..

Only $40 and a great way to get a smart sounding vocal with most microphones.

Also a good quality Mic-pre and a vocal booth can be very helpful.
