which will be your "studio" now..
I have some hardware which I use pretty much for almost every track like a Roland TR 909, a waldorf microQ, a Yamaha AN1X + the Korg ER1 and I don't think I'm going to sell those babies.
But I don't know if sell my sampler or not.... I have an A5000 from yamaha which in my opinion is a very nice tool (built in effects w/ very nice routings, goods filters) and reading steve-o post makes me willing to switch it again and start messing with it like in the past,
but.... live is simpler... and I don't need to run cubase to trigger the samples...
Anyone other of you having the same doubts? I mean, of course with the computer most of the tasks tend to be easier and quicker, but hardware gears have their advantages in some circumstances

For my software recording:
Reason-(slave) as a sound source of much variety.
+
FLStudio Producer-(slave) as another sound source.
Piped INTO
Ableton 3, then 4-(master) as my centerpiece-i do all my composition, recording, sample reworking, arranging, sequencing, mixing, and if its 4 Mp3 release only;mastering too.
Its amazing to me how many people ive met that still havent enjoyed the awesome ease that Live affords producers/artists.
The release of Live 4 will become an essential tool for the creative artist.
Indespensible,really from ver. 1 ,IMO

my studio will soon be :
sony vaio centrino with rme,
loaded with live4, reaktor and supercollider
a few smartelectronix plugs
sonalksis compressor and eq
a pair of dynaudio bm6a
doepfer drehbank
my mixer (using one stereo input but using faders as midi ctrl:)
a midi keyb to record midi seqs and trig scenes and clips
that's all
pretty streamlined, isn'tit ?
i can kiss energyxt goodbye if live 4 midi features are good enough. don't get me wrong : i like it but i like simple setups best

how do you like the drehbank? and i'm confused by what you said -- you're using the drehbank as a (midi)mixer... but it doesn't have a stereo in, does it?Anonymous wrote:my studio will soon be :

Here's one way I integrate my hardware into Live
Well, if I had a powerful computer I probably would ditch the S6000, because it takes up a lot of real estate. But since I don't, I'm going to take advantage of the Akai's modulation capabilites and Live 4's midi sequence ability. I can assign any of Live 4's midi sequencers to a cc number and then assign that number to a parameter in the Akai. So I'll have Kontakt like functionality for the S6000 - probably for your A5000 too. THe S6000 is like having two 64 voice samplers with excellent synth capabilities in a hardware box which won't drain my cpu, or introduce instability into my setup. With Ak.sys software, my setup is streamlined - all samples on the Computer hard drive, all samples in Wav format. I just drag and drop from the akai into live or my v-synth via USB.minimal wrote:I have some hardware which I use pretty much for almost every track like a Roland TR 909, a waldorf microQ, a Yamaha AN1X + the Korg ER1 and I don't think I'm going to sell those babies.

All that being said, if I had the CPU power, I'ld probably go all soft sampler. But even without Live, the S6000 with my MPC 1000 is very easy to make music on, at least for me. RIght now with Live three, I use primarly as a audio sequencer to complement my MPC. Occasionally I'll use it as a sound design tool as well, using clip envelopes and Live and PSP plugs to do add complex effect and parameter modulation for samples. Heres something that I'll do.
If I have to, Use the v-synth for timestreching a sample across a key range. Takes less than five minutes. I usually use the arpeggiator in the v-synth to automate paramemeter modulation much like clip envelopes work in live - but the v-synth lacks an esential feature which often makes live much more usefull. I record each sample across the key range into live, using warp but not changing the tempo so there is no loss of sound quality.
I then take the samples into live and use clip envelopes to add any effects or modulation changes via the clip envelopes. I trigger each sample - all 61 of the - in live. Using the bar quantize, I just run the notes across the keyboard and live eventually catches up and records. I then render to disc, rendering the effects as loop!! Key feature that the v-synth lacks!!!
Then I'll load them back into the v - and mangle some more. But ususally go straight into the Akai and set up a mutli. Sometimes I'll use the the MPC 1000 to sequence, and then record back into Live. Othertimes, I'll sue live to sequence.
This is just one way I use my gear, especially when it comes to using sampes. I also use a Micro Modular, an Evolver, a machinedrum and a SH 101 (usually as a source for raw analog waves. If I'm travelling I'll use Reason with Live.
Minimal, with Live 4, you'll have the midi feature's you need to take full advantage of the unrealized potentional in your A5000. Don't sell it just yet, as they only fetch around 350USD any way.
Hi Steve O,
thanx for your comments, in fact I think I'm not going to sell my A5000. I though I could try to sell it and go for an S6K like yours or an EMU (Yamaha dropped out the samplers productions, so no more OS updates, no software working *properly* with WinXP / OS X) but as you said I would hardly make the money for a coffe by selling it, so I'm going to keep it, I can live with some limitations I have (I can't import wav directly via SCSI... I'll stuck with digital I/O).
In fact, listening to my old tunes entirely done with the A5K and the microQ I got nostalgic about its filters, effects.
So, thanks to ableton againv for giving us the MIDI power in Live!

thetonewrecker...shiii. are you still human..or somehow get lost in the machines...i like that picture, even being the opposite of you, just software for , and my voice...god, 18 years...i´m on my second one and considering seriously to forget everything, i may have lost the fun, and whitout it is 10 times harder..
Ditch it...
Well I'll probably be getting rid of sonar and project 5...
Most likely I'll keep fruity loops (if live 4 doesn't do decent enough quantizing) and reason...

drush :
sorry it wasn't clear
i'm using the drehbank to control live parameters
but i am also using a roland vm3100pro, but only as a DAC for
my (active) speakers and as a midi controller, too... having
eight faders allows to do things which are difficult with the drehbank
(for instance quickly muting 4 tracks at once etc...)

hopefully this is what my setup will be by the end of the summer:
Ableton 4
Wavelab
M-audio Delta 1010
Yamaha CS-5
Nord Micromod
Elektron Machine Drum
Casio Sk-1
Yamaha Pss-480
Evolution UC-33
M-audio Keystation 88
a crappy Midi keyboard
i'm yet to get the Machinedrum and the keystation and i'm yet to sell a bunch of crap gear i have, but financially this is a possibility.
i stop at nothing to talk of my gear.
