Live 6 on Macbook ?
Live 6 on Macbook ?
A quick question:
I'm currently running Live 4 on a Powerbook G4 1.25Ghz. I've got the opportunity to pick up a Macbook pretty cheap and i wanted to know - would a bottom of the range Macbook running Live 6 perform better/faster than my current Powerbook ?
Thanks in advance !

If you take rosetta out of the equation, CoreDuo will kick the fuck out of a G5 processor. I can't produce the link, but I'm sure I read that a MacBook 2Ghz was holding its own against a G5 Dual PowerMac.
What model are you going for? Core2Duo apparently is 25% quicker than the Duos, although I suspect you could half this realistically. As for the 64bit architecture, well barely any programs are coded to exploit that technology, but Leopard is and will thus be conducive to a comphrehenisve speed increase in the general workings of the OS itself. Regardless, new OS of for Macs ALWAYS offer some form of a speed increase because Apple actually have smart programmers working for them.
The thing with MacBooks is that you really need a GIG of Ram, the difference is quite noticable. For example, Apples pro editing suite for photography won't even run on anything less than 512. Best to buy it 3rd party however, as Apple seem to apply around a 40percent increase on the market value of RAM. Crucial is your best bet, as they are wholesale and sell RAM to people like Apple, IBM etc and offer good quality RAM.
As for the MacBook in general, despite it's teething problems, it really is a brilliant little computer, and of course you can run OSX and XP either seemlessly though Parralles (2GIG of RAM recommend) or natively through Bootcamp. The only issue I take with it is that a lot of the free VSTs are not updated to UB and I really relied upon a handful that were essential to some of the music I produce. But fuck it, all the professional plugs are UB these days anyway.
Good luck.
