Filarion - How is the robustness of the MIDI drivers? This is my main concern about FW, as I have not had great results with M-Audio's Ozonic

I dont think it is so sure that they are on the way out. While cheapo pc companies jumped on the expresscard wagon immediately, the newest Sonys feature both, considering that Sony and Mac sharing since years hardware manufacturer it wont be to big deal to have PCMCIA in future mac models, specially if the demand is there.
There is no question about superiority of cardbus systems like RME, the midi and audio latency are half of FW systems. Unless there appears an amazing product ( TC might be one) I wont compromise- because it is crucial for live playing, specially midi side, so if no PCMCIA Mac I will not buy Mac again.

so far it's been smooth. I did get some latency I couldn't compensate with midi or track delays when recording midi-synced gear into Live, but that's par for the course, don't have any problems in Logic.
I'm sending midi clock out to nord modular and machinedrum on both ports and when playing back everything syncs up perfectly, even when adding loads of extra midi data going from the nord modular g2 to the machinedrum routed via the Fireface. for me the two midi ports were actually the deciding factor in getting the Fireface 400 since I need two ports when playing live. I can leave the Midisport at home now..

UPDATE: The Cardbus to PCMCIA adapter solution looks to be getting closer. (At least we have pictures of it now) By the end of the year, they say.

There's no way Apple'd go back. Expresscard is the next iteration of the PCMCIA technology. Eventually all the soundcard manufacturers will follow suit. We're in a transition period that's all.rikhyray wrote:I dont think it is so sure that they are on the way out. btw. I contacted Echo about an expresscard version of the Indigo cards. They said they had no plans which is why they released the Audiofire2/4 stuff.
nice to see such adapters, getting the impression I wil be able to use the RME cardbus in the future too, but my concern is latency, do these systems have the same transfer rate of the "old" cardbus?Pitch Black wrote:UPDATE: The Cardbus to PCMCIA adapter solution looks to be getting closer. Suit #1: I mean, have you got any insight as to why a bright boy like this would jeopardize the lives of millions?
Suit #2: No, sir, he says he does this sort of thing for fun.

The whole idea of expresscard is very good, you are basically plugged right in to the mobo like a mug (this is the technical term).
What seems kind of odd is that hardly any of the hardware companies that do PCMCIA carbus peripherals have been clued into the advent of expresscard.
[edited, took out an extra "i" in pcmcia]

UTENZIL a tool... of the muse.
I was chatting to E-mu engineers at Sounds Expo in London earlier this year. He said that emau are looking to have the MicroDocks becoming universal across a range of Emu sound cards.
Since we have seen the 1616m PCI, which has the same microdock as the 1616m PCMCIA.
I beleive you will be able to buy a pci card, for those with the cardbus switching to PCI (laptop to desktop) can do so by simply adding the correct PCI card.
It wont be long before they release the Express card, you should be able to buy the card on its own,
afterall, with the 1616m package, the microdock is te expensive part.
I say buy it, I think its the best laptop solution. the sound is amazing, the patchmix is awesome.

The Apple engineer at the same show told be that the Express card is 14 times faster than the cardbus IIminimal wrote:nice to see such adapters, getting the impression I wil be able to use the RME cardbus in the future too, but my concern is latency, do these systems have the same transfer rate of the "old" cardbus?Pitch Black wrote:UPDATE: The Cardbus to PCMCIA adapter solution looks to be getting closer. This should mean that the adaptor will run the pcmcia slot exactly as they run now.
