What Side Chain Compressor do you use?

Post by mauve » Fri Mar 09, 2007 9:41 pm

I have a waves compressor that has side-chaining option but for some reason it does not work in Live, that is the compressor works but the side-chaining does not. I found a free comp. that does the trick.
Does anyone use side-chain comps. and what kind?
Thanks

on mac universal binary the only one seems to be DualComp by Teragon audio. It clicks a bit, but rbmonosyllabik made a rack that avoids some of the clicking (see Rack List sticky), although this rack failed to work on my setup (I rebuilt a very similar rack that works fine). What free compressor did you find?
Also something I would suggest for your waves compressor is did you use the right routing?

I have the DualComp and it does work on G5 Mac.
When i use the waves C1 comp-sc I can't rout it the same way the DualComp allows it.

is there any reason the dual comp wouldn't be working on a UB intel mac?

this is a massive flaw in ableton as i have invested alot in a waves bundle only to find i am restricted... i mean im completely happy using ableton but there are a few little things like this that make u realise that it is not as pro as logic and cubase. it hurts thinking i have to learn a new sequencer... i did use cubase but its away to deep...i guess went you get to mixing down stage you need a channel strip...this is were ableton lacks...but then i guess it was designed for performance first and foremost.

is ableton's compressor not doing it for you? i make house, and I know sidechaining is VERY important, i think i have been getting good results with lives compressor for typical pumping, but are any of these other compressors better?

you should be able to use your waves comp as sidechain if it has a sidechain button to engage. i dont have your compressor but i can do this with stilwell rocket compressor which has a sidechain button. this is how i do it (hopefully should work on your waves comp):

1) put your waves comp on the track you want to duck and engage the sidchain button.
2) duplicate your kick track and rename it KICK TRIGGER and DO NOT deactivate this track
3) on your KICK TRIGGER track in the "audio to" box select the track you want to duck (the one with your waves comp on)
4) in the box under the "audio to" box make sure to select your waves compressor

this has now routed the TRIGGER KICK track into the sidechain function of your waves comp. now you can play with your compressor and it should be ducking to the kick trigger track.
hope this works as i dont have your compressor to try it but it should be ok.

PS. be careful when using Waves pluggins not to choke on your ilok dongle... some terrible statistics out there about that 8O

for sidechainpumping, i always use the live compressor as the "sound" doesnt matter (i'd use a saw wave tremolo that syncs to the upbeat if there was one good and precise enough)
