I have a Live set with a series of (MIDI) clips all on the same track. I have assigned these clips to keys on the computer keyboard using key mapping. (I also tried using MIDI mapping instead of key mapping and got exactly the same results.)
When I want to switch from one clip to another, I release the key assigned to the currently playing clip and hold down the key assigned to the clip I want to play next. I do this as quickly as possible, to avoid any gaps between the clips.
Sometimes this works fine.
However, sometimes the new clip flashes momentarily, but then stops flashing before it starts playing, and never actually plays.
If I keep holding down the first key when I press the second key, the second clip always seems to launch fine. I can then release the first key and the second clip carries on playing (until I release the second key).
However, if I release the first key after pressing the key to launch the second clip but before the second clip actually starts to play (i.e. before it reaches an appropriate position for its quantise value) then the second clip will never play.
It appears that releasing the key for the first clip, while the first clip is playing, sends some kind of "stop signal" to the track (rather than to the clip) and this signal stops the second clip from ever playing, as well as terminating the first clip.
I've been able to see this happening by using large quantise values. But my real clips have quantise values from 1/2 to 1/32. So it's not always practical to make sure I've released one key before pressing the next. Neither is it always practical to keep holding down the first key until the second clip has started playing.
I guess that either the first clips's "stop signal" need to be clip specific; or the first clip's "stop signal" need to becomes ineffective as soon as the key for the second clip is pressed (and the second clip starts flashing) not only once the second clip actually starts playing.
I'm preparing for a live gig, and this is causing me a major headache. I can't see how to achieve what I need to achieve now...
